[#109] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers Dear Taimsonsing The best enter level Pilot preamp is Pilot SP-210, but this preamp required power supply from SA-260 and SA-232. For more advanve level, you can go for either Pilot SP-215, SP-216 or SP-216A. One thing I must be clear before you test above preamp. Pilot preamp sound very sweet, mellow and smooth, but the disadvantage is slightly slow and lack of extension of high. If you looking for clear, transparent details of high, than Pilot preamp will not be your cup of tea. If you like romance, mellow, sweet, warm and smooth tone, but also like slow song, than Pilot preamp will not disappoint your ears.

[#110] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers I got it, however, do you think they (215,216,216a) will be match with WE KS16608 or not?

[#111] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers The WE KS-16608 has very sweet and mellow tone with good mid, but slightly lack of body of mid-low. Sure WE KS-16608 can match with Pilot SP-215, SP-216, SP-216A without any problem. As I mention before, the Pilot sound slightly slower but sligthly lack of extension of high. It can produce very romance and relax tone, specially good at reproduce slow male song and sadness song...! However, it does not sound too good for pop and rock music or some jazz required clear treble and quick response of bass. It you like fast and tight sound than Pilot may not your cup of tea...! I would suggest you should arrange a listening test to ensure that is your cup of tea before you buy!

[#112] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers Master Pilotrol, yes, but I have no way to find a Pilot amp to testing. I have a Eico HF85 and Dynaco PAS2 when use with KS16608, as you mention that, soft and smooth. However, I find it's not "thick enough". So that I am looking for try Pilot or Fisher preamp. Any comment on Fisher preamp too?

[#113] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers Dear Taimonsing If you are looking for thick body than the Pilot SP-216, SP-216A SP-210, Fisher 80-C, Fisher 90-C, McIntosh C-22 and Stromberg Carlson AE-426. Pilot SP-216 and SP-210 has thick body very sweet and mellow tone but the problem is slightly lack of quick response in bass and slightly lack of treble. Fisher 80-C and 90-C has very outstanding mid-range with good body thickness as well. The tone is realistic and forward. The problem is slightly lack of harmonic extension, but not as soft and smooth as SP-216 and SP-210. Sorry to say that they are not too user friendly…! McIntosh C-22 has outstanding thickness of bass with rich body, slightly tight and heavy bass, but not as soft, sweet and mellow as Pilot SP-210, SP-216A or SP-216. The realistic of mid-range also cannot compete with Fisher 80-C or 90-C…! Stromberg Carlson AE-426 has very similar song characteristic as McIntosh C-22, but it has much open up treble, forward but natural tone, but not as soft, sweet, mellow and smooth as Pilot SP-216 and SP-210…! Hope you understand that there is always a trade off in world of hi-fi…! Have Fun!

[#114] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers I highly recommand you can try Pilot SP-210, but the only problem of this preamp is required power supply (you can DIY one). If you don't mind tuner preamp, you can try Pilot FA-690 or FA-690A...! They have very warm, smooth and mellow tone at not too high cost but you can also have some fun on FM tuner...!

[#115] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers How's Pilot compare with Eico HF85?

[#116] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers Dear Taimonsing Eico HF-85 is sound very musical, warm and smooth, but not too details or slightly lack of extension of high and transparent. The Pilot SP-210 and SP-216 sound smoother, sweeter, warmer and slightly thicker than HF-85, both of them has very mellow mid-range, but slightly of extension and detail of high as Eico HF-85...!

[#117] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers Then as you mean, they are belong to same type? So should I try so much in one kind of preamp, or better to try another type like Fisher?

[#118] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers You must have a clear idea for what kind of sound characteristic you exactly looking for before you buy! I strongly suggest you to arrange A/B test before you make your final decision...! Since only you own ears can tell what is good or bad for you...! Hence: Pilot is much more concentrated in mid and mid-low range, sweetness, smoothess and mellow tone is always Pilot's selling point, but not details...!

[#125] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers "Eico HF-85 is sound very musical, warm and smooth, but not too details or slightly lack of extension of high and transparent. The Pilot SP-210 and SP-216 sound smoother, sweeter, warmer and slightly thicker than HF-85, both of them has very mellow mid-range, but slightly of extension and detail of high as Eico HF-85...! " -------------------------------------------------- I would have some reservation on the description. First, most HF-85s were kits built by DIY amateurs whose skills could be extremely awful - bad cold-soldering, wrong wiring, etc. I have checked more than 10 numbers of HF-85. Each of them has VERY different performance - ranged from a muddy sound image to an extremely smooth tonality. Good or bad sound HF-85? Depends! Second, the best built kits (and factory wired) HF-85 have very well high extension and smoothness in overall tonality. But its mid range and bass control is not close to Fisher 400CX or 400CX-2. In terms of price and satisfaction, EICO HF-85 may however win the 400CX or 400CX-2. But of course this is only a rough expression of unequal comparison because you cannot buy a 400CX or 400CX-2 at the price of HF-85 which already very good in sound. On balance, at the price of 400CX we can buy 5 units of HF-85. But 5 units will NOT sound better than one unit. :) Ironically, self-powered mono preamp HF-65 is a model older than HF-85, but HF-65 "improves" the weakness in HF-85 in the mid range and bass control! Alan - I have not compared HF-85 and HF-65 with SP-210 or SP-216. Let's have a party one day. :) ![]()

[#126] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers Richard, about HF85, Goodall launch first then Sprague?

[#127] Fisher and Pilot 古董同好會 ~ Vintage Amplifiers rsbn589, Yes, there are different components used at different times of production. The earliest HF-85 uses GOODALL wax-sealed coupling capacitors. the later releases use Pyramid plastic moded capacitors. In both cases, the sound is nice! Pyramid plastic moded capacitors are also fund in the famous Laffeyatte KT-600 preamps. All EICO amps were budget class products in the competitive audio market in the late 1950s to early 1960s. To enable EICO to compete with otehr brands, EICO chose only the 'best price-quality' components but output transformers are always the high class, e.g. Chicago trans and Acrosound TO-330.
