[#2] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 All of us playing CAS want to know too. I've audited Majik & Minera respectively at home but still can't get answer. Majik is a very good solutio for CAS but Weiss is a great DAC. You have to consider using which software when you go with Weiss. But there is definitely no such problem when doing with Majik. Very simple and easy handling, just improve the intranet speed as well. 最後修改時間: 2010-05-06 13:29:15 |

[#10] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 I am using Majik DS and it doesn't have volume control but Majik DS-1 has. Majik DS is a music renderer and it includes a DAC inside. However, you cannot choose what sample rate or bit depth and it will automatically upsample to 384khz. Linn DS is a good machine but you cannot manipulate much. |

[#11] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 Is it real that the machine will upsample to 384khz automatically? I can't find it in the website. |

[#12] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 i seem to remember reading from the tech white paper that weiss dac 2 also upsamples to 32/384, but somehow i can't find that reference again in their documentation. maybe it's my bad memory. |

[#13] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 The DSP of DAC2 working in 32bit, so upsampling to 32bit is reasonable. |

[#14] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 can eat or mandatory upsample? Is that mean whatever bit rate input, machine will upsample to 32bit? How about Majik / Minerva? |

[#16] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 Minerva uses (TI) Burr Brown PCM1792. PCM1792 is 24bits da. There is no upsampling inside Minerva. Only top-of-the-line DAC1 MkII uses DSP to upsample incoming data. BTW, asyn upsample, e.g. 44k->96k (instead of 44k->88k) is arguably not a good way of manipulating the data stream 最後修改時間: 2010-08-11 20:34:23 |

[#17] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 thanks m40 hing. i really can't quite grab the concept right. this is really hard to understand. some manufacturers boast oversampling is king, like some which can os cd signal to sacd status (claim), some are silent about it and don't tell you much. i just checked 1792 spec and it says built-in 8x oversampling digital filter. does not that mean signal is os before decoding (all within the chip)? or is it something different? i also want to know if it's oversampling that gives higher and higher dynamic range or SNR? 最後修改時間: 2010-08-11 21:01:56 |

[#18] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 Naim has published a white paper explains oversampling and filtering quite clear. http://www.naimaudio.com/userfiles/modules/attachment/naim_dac_august_2009.pdf In short, oversampling is necessary because it can simplify the filtering, not to 'enhance' the original data. Besides, don't mix up oversampling and upsampling. Upsampling refers upcovert the original signal before entering the da process. Oversample happens inside the da, take more samples than it should. Both processes cannot enhance the original data, just make other processing better or easiler 最後修改時間: 2010-08-11 21:22:31 |

[#19] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 >some manufacturers boast over(up?)sampling is king, like some which can os cd signal to sacd status (claim), some are silent about it and don't tell you much. Upsampling can be done cheaply, like install a several dollar worth upsampling chip. Or can be done in sophisticated way (programmable DSP, FPGA etc) with proprietary algorithm. Some designers think use of upsampling chip is bad idea. There are many ways to 'cook' the data in the way they think the best. We as customer just need to to be careful of marketing hype. 最後修改時間: 2010-08-11 21:45:37 |

[#20] Linn Majik Ds vs Weiss 2 thx m40 hing, points are well taken care. We also have a nice white paper celebrating its 10 years old on this topic. http://www.weiss-highend.ch/medea/documents/medea_manual_000.pdf From page 8. "Upsampling, Oversampling and Sample Rate Conversion in General" Any kind of digital signal processing DSP (e.g. volume, filtering, upsampling, oversampling) expands digital wordlength. A simplify example is when you have 1dB and you want cut the volume in half 50% = 0.5dB = 2 decibels. If you further want to cut the volume in half = 0.25dB = 3 decibels. How long the word length in final output depends on the algorithms that being used. E.g. CD = 16bit/44.1kHz -> Upsampling to 88.2kHz. If this is a 32bit DSP calculation, the output processed 88.2kHz data will automatically expand the wordlength from 16bit to 32bit. As m40 hing mentioned, this 32bit is not enhanced resolution, it is a side product from DSP calculation. For DSP, we believe the longer wordlength should be better in the old days. (When we didn't have high resolution DSP and storage were still 16bit all the time, that was the digital dark ages) For now, most DSP (calculations) are high enough and one should be more focused on which algorithms are being used. A paper was written 8 years ago may give some information on this topic. http://www.designwsound.com/pdf/my_articles/dithering.pdf And on going to this topic: (1) CD (16bit/44.1kHz) -> (2) DSP volume in 32bit resolution -> (3) Weiss DAC2 PCM1792 24bit DAC From (2) to (3) there is a wordlength reduction from 32bit to 24bit, this should apply dither for the best result. Without talking anything on the analogue domain, one can clearly see "the devil is in the details". Similar paper regarding DSP calculation was written about 11 years ago when Daniel and I were talking on his first ever DAC design, later on this becomes Medea. This article if I am corrected was published on JTS (Journey to Sound). http://www.designwsound.com/pdf/my_articles/float_fixed.pdf Hope this help. |
