[#445] Active Speaker 同好會 #444 Thanks for your impression. Correction for myself. Boulder actually runs on A/B amp not D, and I like the fact it is a sealed cabinet. It has attached raved reviews everywhere. Perhaps I should short-list it, too.

[#444] Active Speaker 同好會 #440 Initially I tried their entry model, Rock. I really like it. No artificial refinement. Very raw and authentical, which is precisely what I wanted. The Boulder is way better than rock. Low frequency department is more than I thought it would deliver.

[#443] Active Speaker 同好會 #436 Hi ich I am also in the East side of Melbourne. Agree in enjoying the music rather than chasing gears. Any particular genre you enjoy? I listen to Classical, jazz, 80s and 90s Canton pop, soft rock. |

[#441] Active Speaker 同好會 #440 @ich JBL sounds bright perhaps because of the horn tweeter? Often impedance mismatch can impact on sound quality/ signature. Are you using Canare star quad? Star quad design has higher capacitance and could roll off high frequency a bit if the length is long. That may help to tame the brightness? I do want to try JBL but they do not make 3 way active. If I was to try the 4312G I would need to get 2 monoblocks. Focal Trio6 ST6 is on my radar. I also did look at Unity Audio Boulder. @Ovator how does it sound being a class D amp?

Wild guess that most active speakers are designed for studio / PA use, and connected to mixers. Studio monitors are designed with flat frequency response curve. Very often they are placed on mixing decks. Audiophiles may not like such characteristics of active studio monitors. I myself found the JBL LSR 308 on the bright side and sharp when using Yamaha MG06 mixer. It sounded more suited my taste when using a "Hi Fi" Perreaux preamp. I may try again with another active monitor later with home studio setting in a spare bedroom. Such setting is ideal for my favourite electronic/dance music genre.

When I had the Spendor BC1 Active I used the Soundcraftsman EQ as a Preamp. It was very good. Or musing it as stand-in Preamp and you may be amazed o ftheir if, only of, got the matching right. |

[#437] Active Speaker 同好會 #436 Hi Michael, Yes, I live in Mel Easter suburb. Just a suggestion to try those mixer as it is designed to be used with studio/PA powered speakers. Not complex to use because you can ignore most knobs. Many many young kids got such set up at home. I first heard the JBL LSR305 speakers in the home studio of a young relative. I then bought a pair of JBL LSR308 (A$500 from FB Market place) paired with Yamaha MG06 mixer + Gustard X18 DAC (2nd hand from Seteronet) with XLR connection (DIY Canare cables) . A lot of details, but somehow the high is too "clean" or "clinical" to me. I have used an old active Perreaux preamp in between and this sounds better to me. Existing setup is using a Yamaha professional P2500 amp to push a pair of Magnepan MG12. The Yamaha MG06 is around A$100 from Cash Converter, Yamaha P2500 power amp is few hundred bugs private sale from someone who does not need it. BTW, I hardly chase for "HiFi" sound now. I am no longer keen to find subtle difference among combinations. I just enjoy listening to music, music and music in my man cave with ample space (compared to HK) and time in Melbourne ,

Hi ich Guess you are in Melbourne also? Thanks for the advice. No I have not tried a mixer. All the knobs make me think it is for professionals. I would not mind looking into it and see whether I should try out. How would you compare a pro gear (mixer) to a consumer level (ordinary preamp) The problems I had with the passive preamp was the impedance mismatch, so I thought anyway. The stepped attenuator is 10k and the Zin of the speakers is 10k. So in order to ensure >10x Zin to Zout I am using a step down transformer after the preamp to dial down the Z. I know it is unorthodox, but I feel it is working well. Cheers |

[#435] Active Speaker 同好會 #434 Ever try mixer as "preamp"? Professional mixing console and active monitors is natural and native combination. I handle mixing deck from time to time. Allen and Heath Zed series analogue mixers sound good. The difference is immediately noticeable even by layman who does not know I have just changed a mixer. It is dirt cheap in audiophile standard.

Hi Ovator Like many audiophiles I do have few gears such as isolation transformer, ground boxes, Schumann generator. What I have found, that gives me the most perceivable improvement, is speaker placement. There are tons of speaker placement calculators online you can search up. I also do find improvement, albeit subtle, after add a passive preamp. I was using the DAC/ Pre and its digital volume control connected directly to the speakers. With the passive preamp in the chain, I could tell bit more nuances and bigger sound stage. Subwoofers add weight and scope to the music, and the line level isolation transformer also raises subtlety. Cheers |
