[#59] What are you listening to? ( classical mus chankaiming and minpin, It is joyful to read you2's post because I find our similar taste to music. Meanwhile, I have taken the same view as you toward Perahia and Zimerman, two great pianist of our generation. Zimerman's Debussy is his only record of my collection but it has already told me a lot of his style, approach, etc. However, I am not very interested in his concerto plays... Perahia is truely my beloved musician. A well educated and gentle person who was a friend and fan of Horowitz. Years ago I attended his concert in HK who played Bach English Suite 3, Beethoven Piano Sonata Moonlight and Chopin's. Three different kinds of musical works that he managed very well. Sitting at the quite front left row, I got a pretty clear observation on his fingering and posture. He did not have much body movement or facial expression (closing eyes sometimes) even during the aggressive portion and this reminded me Horowitz who did not have much body movement either. The Suite 3 and Moonlight was very attractive and well balance. I thought he would further explore Beethoven's work in coming his recording. But it turned up that he released several Bach's recordings within a short period and of course very successful. Personally, I don't like strong body movement or facial expression in live playing because it is very distorbing to me. But to some new generation pianist, especially Chinese, it becomes a must as if it helps the interpretation!? |

[#65] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Perahia was versatile and he excel in many different field, but if I forced to choose one, I would choose his ` Songs without words' In this disc, he play transcriptions by Bach, Liszt transtription of Schubert's songs (Liszt transcription make Schubert songs sing on piano) and Mendelsohnn's songs without words. I choose this as background music of my wedding party. ![]() |

[#68] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night was an night of discovery, I listen to a new piano concerto which I found interesting: Hummel: Piano Concerto in C major, Op.34 Composer: Johann Nepomuk Hummel Conductor: Howard Shelley Performer: Howard Shelley Orchestra: London Mozart Players Audio CD (July 27, 2004) SPARS Code: DDD Number of Discs: 1 Label: Chandos ASIN: B0002AAP9Y Hummel was a contemporary of Beethoven and Schubert, after listening to his music, I am not surprised that he is more famous than Beethoven in his time but less so after he pass away. His music is tuneful and brilliant, and most important very good vehicle for pianist to show off their extraordinary piano technique. However his music lack the depth exhibited by Beethoven but I will qualified him as a composer better than Liszt, at least his music was more tuneful than Liszt. Recording is very trueful, again no objection received from my tasteful wife or my troublesome neighour. ![]() |

[#69] What are you listening to? ( classical mus I follow up with Trio by Chopin and Tchaikovsky, I found Chopin really lost his magic when he go out of his comfort zone, that was his piano. Chopin's piano trio is boring, but Tchaikovsky's Piano trio is as tuneful and lovely as any of his piece. I must take time to listen more from Tchaikovsky. ![]() |

[#70] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Morning! Chopin's cello sonata is supposedly a masterpiece, but I find it difficult too. Listening to the cheap 5 CD French EMI Zacharias set. Light touch, straightforward, good D664. |

[#71] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Haskil introduce me into the world of Mozart, Her playing have a sense of vulnerability making her a perfect player of Mozart. I found her Beethoven too soft, Beethoven should be played in a rage manner, I found Kovacevich more convinicing in this piece of music. In fact, Kovacevich's Beethoven piano concerto No3&4 is acutally the first classical music CD that introduce me to classical music. First love is always the best. ![]() |

[#72] What are you listening to? ( classical mus I agree. At the risk of being labelled misogynist, I'd still say dames are more, erhhh....unpredictable, inconsistent and volatile. Great ones like Haskil and Fischer are no exception. That said Fischer's Beethoven is very good. |

[#75] What are you listening to? |

[#76] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Hi chankaiming hing, I find the Chopin's Piano Trio enjoyable bor. This is the CD I have. Apart from 'Piano Trio in G minor', there is also the 'Polonaise brillante in C Major for Piano'. Yes, without cello. According to the note in CD booklet written by Emanuel Ax, "It is the first recording of this recently discovered manuscript." ![]() |
