After a long long business trip, finally have time to enjoy music. :)

Solo Cantata for 15th Sunday after Trinity, #51
Shout for joy to God (Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen!)
Performer: Elly Ameling, Maurice André (Trumpet)

This is not part of the first nor second cycle in Leipzig. It's a soprano only cantata, same as #199 (Side A, Cantata for the 11th Sunday after Trinity). It's technically very difficult by hearing and jaw dropping if following the score. I wonder if Bach wrote this for a particular church singer in his time.

Elly Ameling's timbre is transparent, very pleasant.

Cantata 16th Sunday after Trinity BWV 95
Christ is my life (Christus, der ist mein Leben)

Although Gardiner said that it doesn't need to be a Christian to appreciate Bach Cantata, I feel that a Christian's point of view makes it easy to recognise the arrangement or structure of the specific purpose. It's a miniature written for Sunday service.

Movement #1 is the opening by the service leader (Tenor) and choir. #2/#3 is the prayer of female congregation's representative (Soprano). #4/#5 is the prayer of male congregations representative (Tenor). #6 is the consolation by preacher on behalf of Jesus (Bass). Finally #7 is probably the affirmative response sung of whole congregation.

The theme is probably not very welcomed nowadays, the yearning for afterlife and to withstand the bitterness and temptation of this wicked and false world.

It could be many to share in this Cantata. The first movement starts with a joyful melody, which I think represent the sentiment of afterlife (A) and it is reused few times subsequently. The the chorus melody (B) representative the affirmation of congregation, ""Christ is my life". Suddenly tempo is slowed down and it turns to a short fugue "To die is a gain for me", then back to the A. So, it's kind of depicting the unfortunate event as the journey to heaven. Then going back to B, "to which I surrender myself, with joy I travel from here". Tenor then sings "With joy, indeed with delight in my heart, I shall depart from here" with A in the background, then a section of wistful mediation using convention recitative tone. The occasional appearance of A serves kind of guidance to the reward of afterlife. The movement is wrapped up by Choir sings B as proclamation "With peace and joy I travel from here according to God’s will, My heart and mind are comforted, calm and quiet. As God has promised me: death has become my sleep."

Too much for me to write movement by movement, I'd highly recommend to read the text while listening and identify the phrase and pattern in each of them. The structure of this Cantata is just marvellous.

It took me nearly 2 years to audition the "The Ring Cycle" from Karajan. Exhausting and a great experience. However, there are time lapse between tracks so I wouldn't say I fully appreciated it as it should be.

Now I got the so called "Authentic" version from Solti(gieven from a friend of mine who bought them when's new) and wonder do I need to go through again?

Any one can share their experience with this respect?

The 2 cycles are completely different. In terms of both recording and performance, Karajan's is more intimate, Solti's bolder and more upfront.

Given your pristine Decca original Solti Ring, I think you should play at least a few cuts. You will be hooked.

There was a programme on BBC4 the other night talking the Sacred Music.

It's nice to see Sir David Wilcox appearing on the programme. He was honoured with the effort to revive the Scared Music in English with the help from the The King's Choir of Cambridge.

I mentioned many times that I love the Sacred Music.
