[#1] AVO VCM163 Dear any si-fu and si-hing, Can any brother enlighten me how to set up the connection to measure PL504 tube using an AVO VCM163 tester. Do I need an extra lead or cap wire to connect the AVO to the PL504 to facilitate the measurement? If so, how should I connect the wire to the AVO panel? The purpose of this exercise is served to match 12 pairs of PL504 for my Graaf OTL amp. But I a dump fool in electrical. I have all the manual and data sheet in hand. See this image of the data page. You need to connect the anode cap test lead on the PL504. Good luck!

I have the data book. Just miss the anode cap lead. There are two holes available at the top panel. Any suugestiowhich hole I should use for the connecting the anode cap lead.

Secondly, any advice where can i order the anode cap lead? Is the lead universal?

dkyyu, may I suggest you give limage a call who so happen have an AVO tester. He used to have the EAR 549 power amp which use the PL 509 that needs a top cap too, sth similar to PL 504. Tube testing, you are dealing with high voltage, better be careful.

Any way, congratz! looks like you have a Graaf GM200?

Thanks Derek, I have a last generation GM200 with both xlr and rca input in proper working and clean cosmetic condition. It just plugged and played, the PL504 sounds very much different to 6C33, to my ears more human, with much deeper and wider sound stage. The manual says it can even cope with 2 ohm speaker.

This is my best guess (because I do not have an AVO V.C.M. 163 with me).

PL504 setting - 441-237-710-0000 80, try TC1 socket, that should be it.
The plate cap test lead is nothing special, make your own if you are in a hurry (see attached image).

Thank you so much. Got it. Will try later this week when I put my rubber shoe and all protection clothing on. I have over 60 spare PL504 NOS to try.

The seller, the younger but senior Chu sir in Tak Fat Monkok (he is the 163 original first owner) made me an earth cable lead using crocodile clip. The AVO is so clean, rarely used (CHu sir has another MK4 and US tester), comes with all original manual, date sheet and even the plastic AVO cover. I loved it and couldn't resist it at my first sight.

Anyway, my heartfelt appreciation again.

Please be very careful with the anode(plate) test lead, it is high voltage.
Wear dry rubber shoes, use only one hand to touch the anode test lead and put your other hand in the clothing pocket.

I just have my Modena and GM20 checked and serviced to top condition by an engineer in the field. The GM200 just had all Pl504 tube replaced and bias set up to top performance by the seller a month ago.

In comparison, the GM200 is almighty, vocal kills you on spot and the sound stage it creates is much enormous, effortlessly driving a pair of 6.5" woofer Sonus Faber vintage. Having said, the GM20 or Modena sounds a little bit cleaner simply and in different music presntation. They are just two kinds of differnet animals. I like them both. If I have to choose, I agree with you I would prefer more to GM200. Besides, the 42-tube GM200 looks more sexy with its green magic eyes are light up.

There is also a service manual and a supplement for CV number equivalent. The service manual has the calibration procedure and the schematic.
