| [#1] Brakes failed, putting in the reverse gear? 呢度講上古車, manual 可以, auto 唔得 現代車又如何? ------------------------------------------------------------------- From Your Quora Digest If your car is out of control and the brakes have failed, will putting it in the reverse gear slow down the car? Ron Shipe, USMC [ret] I, unfortunately, saw that happen once. My first car was a 1952 Mercury. Yes, I'm that old. That thing had a flat-head V 8 with a three speed automatic transmission. Keep in mind that in those days windshield wipers were not electric, they were vacuum operated from the intake manifold. This will come up later. I dated a girl, once, if I remember correctly, who was known to be a real scatterbrain. Driving down a country road with next to no traffic, luckily, at about 50 mph when she reached over and shoved the gearshift into reverse. No idea why. None. The back tires began SCREAMING. The car went sideways with the back wheels trying to swap ends with the front wheels. Full blown out of control skid. Transmissions and engines were tough in those days. I guess. The rear tires finally got traction allowing me to get some control and not kill us. The wipers were going faster than I had ever seen them go. Remember the vacuum powered wipers? The engine was running backwards! I managed to get it into neutral, off the road, out of the car, hood open and the fire out on my flaming carburetor. Had a well deserved nervous breakdown. The key was still on so I pushed the starter button, yes, they had those in those days. It started! Took a while but it started! Took the girl home. Told her that if she moved I would throw her into the back seat. If she moved again I would stuff her into the trunk. OK, if you have a manual shift go ahead and try to get it into reverse. All the noise your gearbox will be making will scare everyone out of your way. If you have an auto trans you're going to end up sideways, out of control. DON'T DO IT!! Gear down! Pray, cuss, whatever makes you feel better. Just not reverse. |

| [#3] Brakes failed, putting in the reverse gear? Don't do it! Should put it to lower gear and steer towards the ditch or hard shoulder slowing down. If all out failed, used the side of your vehicle to rub against the wall/hill/rail guard.... |

| [#4] Brakes failed, putting in the reverse gear? 入後波部車湯得 lu。。。 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Haha.... 鴉姐對車真係有料 睇睇呢篇 Here in the UK, before the break up of Yugoslavia, they used to sell a car known as a Yugo 311. It was basically the old Fiat 126. I believe that Fiat sold the entire production tooling for the 126 including all the jigs and presses to Yugoslavia, where it was rebranded and a communist block engine and gearbox installed.. The car was appalling bad. It had many wonderful features, the one I had actually fell in half eventually, a large crack going all the way across both the inner wings and chassis at the rear end of the front wings. However, the gearbox was the finest of soviet engineering, as well as having virtually no effective synchromesh, it had no interlock protection on the reverse gear, which was down from gear 5. Thus if you wernt careful, it was perfectly possible to put the car in reverse, whilst travelling forward at 60 or 70 MPH. The net effect of doing this was usually to cause the gearbox to explode, leaving many of its internal components on the road behind you. You coudl tell this was a common occurrence, because any 311 that appeared in a scrapyard was stripped of its gearbox, if intact, within hours. It was virtually impossible to find secondhand gearboxes. |

To that end, in 1985, he began importing the Yugo GV, which turned out to be the Mona Lisa of bad cars. Built in Soviet-bloc Yugoslavia, the Yugo had the distinct feeling of something assembled at gunpoint. Interestingly, in a car where "carpet" was listed as a standard feature, the Yugo had a rear-window defroster — reportedly to keep your hands warm while you pushed it. The engines went ka-blooey, the electrical system — such as it was — would sizzle, and things would just fall off. Yugo. Or not.  |
