[#1] BMW car key - battery problem For those BMW without the keyless entry, the car key uses a rechargeable battery that charges when in the ignition and CANNOT be replaced. Keyless go owners have exactly same design of key but designed so the batery can be changed very easily. One of my keys on my 09 525 is now dead because previous owner did not know that the two keys need to be used to keep battery charged - this is natural as many people keep the 2nd key at home and never use, assuming this is only a spare for emergency. Besided option of buying new key from BMW ($4k) is there any other option? Seems so ridiculous to have to pay $4k for a new key when the problem is only a rechargeable battery worth $20! It seems like this design by BMW is so stupid, any rechargeable battery is going to die eventually and need to be replaced. Just because we did not pay extra for the keyless go option when new, we have to eventually pay $4k per key when the rechargeable battery dies.....! |

[#3] BMW car key - battery problem Can you put the used key into the slot to charge for a while before using it? I had an 06 E90 with 2 of these key fobs. I didn't use one of them for the whole 5 years of ownership. When I was about to sell the car, I open the car with the my usual key and drive off with the unused key fob. It charges back nicely. Give it a try |

[#5] BMW car key - battery problem I found that there are some people who claim to be able to replace these new types of "smart" car keys for all brands of cars within 1 hr. I tried to ask more details about whether the key itself is exactly as original or will it be cheap plastic copy but they are unwilling to give me more answer. They just say "I guarantee that I provide a new key that looks and functions same as original, don't ask me about how/where I get the key from". The charge is around 2400-2800 for a replacement key (BMW charge 3xxx), for such little saving, I will go back to BMW. But one guy said he can repair my original key for 1000 but need to leave with him for 1-2hr. any bro have experience using these guys - are they reliable? |
