In an interview, she discusses her return back “home” to the show and the time jump since she’s been gone. Q: The secret is out! How excited are you to come back to The Walking Dead? A: I’m so excited to surprise the fans. I know we left Maggie Rhee up in the air and I can’t wait to bring this to them. I’ve always been a big fan of surprises. My family lives between England and America, so my whole life is about how to make an elaborate plan and not spoil it. [Laughs] I’m really happy. Angela [Kang], Scott [M. Gimple] and I have been talking about how we could make this work and everything just aligned. I’m super excited to see what this next chapter of Maggie will be. Q: What was it like being away from the show for a while? A: The weird thing is that it never really leaves you. I don’t feel like I left. I do stay in touch with everybody on a regular basis. My friends on the show know that this has been in the works. This reentry is going to feel like going home. I get to go out to Atlanta and spend some time on set shadowing one of our directors, Daisy Mayer, this month. Maybe that will be my soft reentry into the universe – or the Georgia weather – but in general, the character never leaves you. It’s a necessity for me to keep her alive. Click here to see all the reasons to be excited Maggie is returning to The Walking Dead. Q: There’s been a long time jump on the show since you left. How does that impact Maggie and the way you’ll portray her now? A: There are definitely things she will have picked up on the road and there’s also the relationship with her son and how growing with him has affected her. Or even what has been happening, I’m in a liberated position to actually not know enough to give spoilers at this point! It’s a nice surprise to come back to these changes, understand what motivates her return, what happened while she was out there and who’s still going to be here when she returns. We have a lot to unpack. Q: Any thoughts on if Maggie might have unfinished business with Negan? A: Just like in life, it might be one of those things she doesn’t know until she faces it. She definitely decided not to kill him on that day when Michonne discouraged her. She did go that way. Forgiveness is liberating. I suppose we’ll get to see to what degree she has decided to liberate herself. Q: In addition to Hershel, there are so many other children who are part of the story. Any thoughts on what the children represent in terms of the future and moving beyond a survival mindset and into one of living? A: It’s a really interesting question. In relation to The Walking Dead universe, we have a landscape where children are now living without any point of comparison to their “post-apocalyptic” world – and seeing how that can be a positive in its own way. Life (as we know it) can be riddled with anxiety and endless comparing and choice-making, I think the show has always done a good job of reminding us what’s really important… being there for each other. Q: We’re now in Season 10. Your first episode aired almost nine years ago. What does it mean to you that the show has endured as it has? A: It’s such an honor to be a part of it and to see it sustain as it has. It’s a testament to the creators and the writers and to our fans. Things wax and wane all of the time, but it takes a lot for something to keep being made – especially now when we have so many choices. The Walking Dead has this unnamable comfort, which is ironic for a show about scary zombies. Q: What are you most excited for fans to see? A: I hope they feel the same way I do coming back, like reuniting with an old friend. |

Currently, the finale of TWD Season 10 has no release date. However, it is likely that the episode, titled "A Certain Doom," will air sooner than other shows canceled due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, possibly in the fall. The delay was announced via the AMC Twitter page. The tweet read: "Current events have unfortunately made it impossible to complete post-production of The Walking Dead Season 10 finale, so the current season will end with its 15th episode on April 5. The planned finale will appear as a special episode later in the year." In that announcement, there is some good news for fans of The Walking Dead. It seems as if the episode has been filmed, and the production crew just need to finish putting it together. This should mean that, once social isolation measures are over or loosened slightly, AMC should be able to release the finale episode fairly quickly. As such, it is likely that "A Certain Doom" will air in the fall—perhaps around the time that Season 11 of TWD was expected to air but now will not due to production shutdowns. Also delayed is The Walking Dead: World Beyond, a spin-off that was meant to air straight after the Season 10 finale of the original show. As such, it seems likely that AMC will air the Season 10 finale the same night that World Beyond premieres later in 2020. |

During The Walking Dead Comic-Con@Home panel, moderator Chris Hardwick announced that the Season 10 finale premiere date is October 4 at 9 p.m., followed by the delayed series premiere of The Walking Dead: World Beyond at 10 p.m. Both The Walking Dead finale and the new spinoff series, World Beyond, were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While this will be the only new Walking Dead episode to air in 2020, all 10 episodes of World Beyond have been filmed and will air without any impact from the pandemic. The Walking Dead Season 10 finale was originally supposed to release on April 12, with TWD: World Beyond intended to premiere immediately following the finale, also on Sunday, April 12. This is no surprise, as production has been delayed while the country has been in lockdown due to the virus. However, Kang did say that the writers' room is already working on new episodes, and the plan is to extend Season 10 by six episodes, which will air in early 2021. "The writers' room for Season 11 has been going remotely for the past few months. We haven't been able to start production, but we'll get back to work as soon as we safely can," said Kang. "We will not be airing Season 11 episodes this year as we normally would in October, but we're excited to announce an extended Season 10, which will be six extra episodes to follow the finale which will air in early 2021 if all goes well. We're working on those now, and we'll have more to share soon. It's an extension of episodes beyond the finale." This episode extension makes The Walking Dead Season 10 the longest season of the show to date; with the addition of six new episodes, it will be 22 episodes in length. Share Autoplay setting: On Of the Season 10 finale, director Greg Nicotero teased that "the last five minutes of the episode take it to a whole other place." We know the Season 10 finale marks the return of Lauren Cohan's Maggie to the series after her departure in Season 9, and Kang revealed what else she is excited for fans to get to see. "I'm excited for people to see what happens with Beta, what happens with Carol and her revenge arc, Daryl and his leadership role. I'll say that Seth [Gilliam's Father Gabriel] has some amazing scenes in this episode. The Commonwealth group, we will get to what I think is a really cool point for them for their journey. "We're still doing that. Andy [Andrew Lincoln] is super involved. [Creator Robert Kirkman] is super involved. It really is proceeding. It's just that current circumstances have given us a little extra time that we seem to need anyways. We really want to do it right." Gimple added: "We've been working on the script and playing around with different aspects of it, but it's still fairly early in there." Plus, Gimple and AMC are working on another anthology spin-off series, Tales of the Walking Dead, which will explore new and existing "characters, backstories, or other stand-alone experiences".
