The Book Of Change or I-ching is the canon which expounds this principle numerically in the form of hexagrams. Confucius has been hailed as 聖之時 the sage of time' Thus the same thing, condition or act considered as good at some time but bad at another or vice versa. Feverishly engaged in accumulation of material goods and other achievements maybe appropriate and perfectly legitimate for the young, energetic and talented but may turn out utterly unsuitable, useless and even harmful if not fatal to a senile octogenarian whose physical and mental capabilities are deteriorating with days. To the latter group of people, the priority is to remain healthy, mentally and physically so as to atone for former mistakes and search for eternal peace and happiness firstly for oneself and ultimately for others. 老子道德經云：功成名遂身退天之道. 老子 Tao Teh Ching had it, "once achievements and fame are acquired, withdraw and retire. Such is the way of heaven" In history both in the East and the West, there are records of the fates and outcomes great personalities and prominent figures who violated or followed this divine decree. True, the old ones might still edify or inspire the younger generation by their experience, but in the main should be "hands off and let the young ones to shoulder the responsibility" Pertinent to this idea is the concept of divergence versus convergence, extension/expansion versus shrinkage/contraction, open versus closure, spreading out versus withdrawing or collecting, outer accomplishment versus inner accomplishment, material versus spiritual advancement. In all these the former activities are appropriate and rightfully so to the young, energetic and capable whereas the latter, aptly belong to old folks of my age and predicaments.
