[#1] Questions about English grammar I would like to ask why commas are USED or NOT USED in the following sentences: 1. I was afraid that people from the asylum would come to Limmeridge looking for the woman they said was Anne Catherick. (Why isn't there a comma after 'Limmeridge'?) 2. She came here yesterday asking for news of her daughter. (Why isn't there a comma after 'yesterday'? 3. He angrily reminded me about Count Fosco's letter, warning him about Anne Catherick. (Why is a comma used after 'Fosco's letter'? 4. A few minutes later he came back, looking worried, and told me that Marian was still sleeping and that I couldn't see her yet. (Why is a comma used after 'back'?) 5. He took me into the garden himself but was then called back to the asylum on urgent business, leaving me alone there. (Why is there a comma after 'business'? The above examples all come from a reader for secondary students. Thanks a lot. |

[#2] Questions about English grammar As far as I know, the rule of thumb seems that if what is intended to say is largely completed before the comma, there will be a comma. Otherwise, you should not use a comma. That is, the phrase after the comma serves to provide supplemental messages. Take (2) as an example. If you stop at "She came here yesterday", the main message about the purpose is missed out. In (3), by using the comma, it implies that the main message is "He angrily reminded me about Count Fosco's letter", which is considered sufficient to stand on its own even without "warning him about Anne Catherick". May be just because everyone knows what the letter is about. If in fact there are many letters from Count Fosco that people do not know which one he is talking about, then the comma should be removed. 最後修改時間: 2020-11-08 11:07:24 |

[#3] Questions about English grammar love to share, if a topic is interesting, first of all, i failed my GCE O level english ..hahhahaa, and did not took any more english lesson etc..or exam since, as even many good UK University did not need English (passed) for certain Technical subject..etc too ( more than 30 something yrs ago, but heard things has been changed ) , always nice to write grammatically correct English, and i am suck at it haha for example 1 the comma seem to be more appropriate before "they said " if we do not add any more subject..etc option 1 I was afraid that people from the asylum would come to Limmeridge looking for the woman, they said was Anne Catherick. option 2 , we need to add someting to aviod any potential grammar mistake ( which only pro can be certain ) I was afraid that people from the asylum would come to Limmeridge, and "those people are" looking for the woman, "and " they said was Anne Catherick. or I was afraid that people from the asylum would come to Limmeridge, they were looking for the woman, and said to be Anne Catherick. there are no fix rule using comma for a long sentence , especially a comma have a few purposes too but it is not exactly correct for adding a comma to a long sentence by not adding any more Subject or take a way some words..etc.. Example 2 She came here yesterday , and asked for news of her daughter. it is the way who the writer intended or... a piece of Sentence we have seem somewhere , may be it is the direct wording "record" from what people really used when they saying it, hence...those type of sentences may never be Grammatically correct when people speak.. or type at the way or exact words of what they said.... Grammar..etc..was also not too correct...haha same as we write Cantonese i suppose.. Example 3 , what bankguy said was so correct there are sectional and complete and standalone meaning , when why not to use or not use "comma", it is a choice to express for emotionally purpose or easier to read etc............, there are section but without senses... .best for not using Comma or rewrite that long sentences etc 最後修改時間: 2020-11-08 11:46:09 |

[#5] Questions about English grammar fundamentally we need to understand a basic rule, (which i have no idea , and long forgot.............. haha) does the sentence before the "comma " it is before the Comma is what critical ...haha does that section of Sentence before the Comma have some specific requirement ... so difficult.. any English teacher at here? love to learn it too haha example 1 is simple and quite an interesting example too " I was afraid that people from the asylum would come to Limmeridge looking for the woman they said was Anne Catherick" lets say I was afraid that people from the asylum would come to Limmeridge, looking for the woman they said was Anne Catherick however it will be the writer actually said what if... the person wrote it and he means I was afraid that people from the asylum would come to Limmeridge, i was looking for the woman, they (those people came to limmeridge ) said was Anne Catherick or some people have a dizzy morning and do not know why u undertood as above? is it nice to write with less confusion by adding a comma and a few more words..if we remember haha so it is much better if it is I was afraid that people from the asylum would come to Limmeridge, they looked for the woman called Anne etc haha 最後修改時間: 2020-11-08 11:58:52 |
