An Air Canada employee has been charged Published: March 30, 2026 at 10:30AM EDT An Air Canada employee is facing charges after they allegedly attempted to traffic 66 kilograms of cannabis to Germany, using the luggage tags of two unsuspecting passengers to conceal the drugs. In a news release issued Monday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said officers were called to Toronto Pearson International Airport on Feb. 19 after Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) personnel discovered 33 kilograms of cannabis in each checked bag of two German citizens who were set to depart on a commercial flight to Germany. The passengers, who were travelling separately and did not know each other, were arrested by the RCMP. Both denied owning the luggage. The suitcases were identical and police determined that neither passenger had checked them in. “Investigators found that an Air Canada employee working in the baggage room, had placed luggage tags bearing the unsuspecting passengers’ names onto the suitcases that contained the cannabis,” they said. The two German passengers were released and on March 12, the RCMP arrested and charged Air Canada employee Atasha Weathley with possession for the purpose of export and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. “This investigation demonstrates the commitment of the RCMP and CBSA to protecting the integrity of Canada’s cross–border air transportation system. Individuals who attempt to exploit their position of trust within the aviation industry to facilitate illegal activity will be held accountable,” RCMP Supt. Dale Foote said in a statement. The 32-year-old Mississauga resident was held for bail and released with conditions.
