5th March 2024 – (Edinburg) Thomas Wong, an 11-year-old boy hailing from a Hong Kong family, was killed in a collision with a bin lorry while cycling to school in Edinburg. The tragedy occurred on Whitehouse Road around 8.20am this past Friday, prompting an outpouring of grief and support for the family.

The young boy, described by his bereaved family as “the perfect son”, was cycling to Cramond Primary School when the incident unfolded. Police Scotland confirmed that Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene despite the rapid response of emergency services.

Thomas’s family, struggling with an unimaginable loss, issued a poignant statement through the police, expressing their devastation. “We are utterly heartbroken,” they said. “Thomas was not just the perfect son but also the best little brother and adored by all his family.”

The headteacher of Cramond Primary School, Helen Donaldson, remembered Thomas as a “positive, friendly, and curious” child, always seen with a smile on his face. “We are utterly devastated by the tragic news of the sudden death of one our pupils,” she stated, reflecting the sentiments of the school community.

Inspector Andrew Thomson of Police Scotland extended his thoughts to Thomas’s family and friends during this distressing time and assured them that specially trained officers are providing support. He also called for anyone with information, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigations.

The driver of the bin lorry involved in the incident was reported unharmed, and a full report is expected to be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

This incident marks the second such tragedy in Scotland this year, following the death of an 11-year-old girl in Edinburgh last month, who succumbed to injuries sustained after a bin lorry struck her in the Borders.

英國馬路其實係明安全暗危險，由其近城市既地方好大班既司機渣車係亂黎，太多外來人所以司機質數係好參差，實際路面情況其實遠比香港危險得多，平時係路面被寵慣，d車好似好守法好安全咁，放低戒心之後，時候到遇到個亂黎既就一野被收皮。真係唔好俾d細路係馬路踩單車，出事就後悔莫及

Edinburgh’s councillors will urgently look at safety improvements needed following the tragic death of an 11 year-old boy who was hit by a bin lorry.

"An emergency motion being tabled at the council’s transport and environment committee on Thursday, March 7, will call on officials to “consider as a matter of urgency what actions are required to improve safety within this area,” once they visit the site where the incident occurred and “any police feedback is received”.

This could include reviewing the school travel plan for Cramond Primary School, where Thomas was a pupil, “if required,” the motion states.

Police Scotland are continuing to urge any witnesses or people with CCTV or dash cam footage to come forward.

Local councillor Kevin Lang, who is calling for the emergency debate to be held, said: “The loss of young Thomas, and in such tragic circumstances, has been deeply distressing for people across Cramond and Barnton. You can see this in the sea of flowers, cards and messages at Whitehouse Road next to where the accident occurred."
