I originally bought Panasonic 50" PW5 but there was no stock. The shop lent me a 50" PW3 (old stock but never been used). That TV was great for movies on DVD with excellent contrast and detail, but it was hopeless for TV (I tried S-video, VGA input, doubler ... everything). Even worse, the whole plasma just broke down and could not be turned on in only 4 weeks (even though it was new and never used) !! In fact, my friend who uses a 42" PW5 also claims his plasma malfunctioned within 1 month of delivery. I later heard from other people that Matsushita has recalled many PW5 range plasma sets for defects in Japan - I don't know how true this is.
Anyway, after a LONG wait for the 50" PW%, and after seeing all the troubles with the Panasonic, I called the shop and they agreed to change my order to the Pioneer 503HDG. This 'hong' goods was the same price as the Panasonic 'water' goods. Both included wall mount and speakers, but the Pioneer included the media station (TV tuner) as well. That sounds like a bargain to me ! I was also impressed that the Pioneer won many awards in overseas magazines (including Plasma of the Year 2002 from Essential Home Cinema, and Best Buy Plasma of 2002 from What HiFi).
I can tell you now that the Pioneer is excellent all round for both TV and DVD. The included media station gives much better TV pictures (even for 50") than anything I could achieve with the Panasonic. Watching Cable TV and TVB, the picture is 90% as good as my previous 29" Toshiba CRT TV. No major problem at all with grainy or off-colour pictures. I was truly impressed. For TV, I would give the Panasonic 75%, but the Pioneer 90%.
For DVD, I must admit that the Pioneer is not as good as the Panasonic PW3 I had. In particular, the contrast really is less good: the details in dark shadow is poor for the Pioneer. However, the Pioneer gives very bright, exciting colours and excellent sharpness. The picture clarity is the same for both machines. Overall, the Pioneer is only slightly behind the Panasonic. For DVD, I would give the Panasonic 95%, and the Pioneer 90%.
In my living room, I would also say the Pioneer looks better. Both are 50", but the Pansonic looks big and bulky with awkward looking speakers. The Pioneer is slimmer and has more modern looking speakers. Also, I like the look of the sleek, futuristic media station even though it is an extra box. The Pioneer is also much quieter because it has no fan.
I use my plasma for 50% TV and 50% DVD. With this usage, I would definitely prefer the Pioneer and I am very satisfied with my choice. I only wish the Pioneer's contrast was better !! |
