| [#1] Eden Atwood - Waves: The Bossa Nova Session (SACD) Having heard and own other Groove Note issues and understand their very limited and yet top notch productions, I bought this SACD few months ago only having heard clips from the web. My eager anticipation turned into heart warming satisfaction. The easiest thing I can say about this CD is that the more I listen to it, the more I like it. Honestly never heard of Eden Atwood before but after this, I will definitely watch out for her future releases. Those looking forward to a particular ‘genre’ singer might be disappointed. To me she sings in a mixture of samba and jazzy kind of way. One comparison easily comes to mind is Jacintha, having under the same label released several audiophile’s favorite CDs, sang in a more artistic, clean and yet, in a bit more distant kind of way. Eden, on the other hand, sang with a lot of heart, warmth and in a much close-to-you and approachable manner, which I surely more enjoyed. She might not be the very best singer you have heard but is sure very touching and enjoyable, no doubt did her job very well in this probably her better known release under a serious music and audiophile label. Do read the very touching liner notes, a short story of Eden’s heartbreaking events in life. The musicians are again excellent, pretty much Groove Note’s house band, eg, Bill Cunliffe on piano, Anthony Wilson on guitar. Recording wise, as in other Groove Note issues that I have, are worth every cent and worth. Just so natural, so lush and with so much 3 dimension. The recording was clean and has a good sense of depth and instrument location. You don’t need a whatever reference SACD sampler, get this and you’ll get real music and great recording. Vinyl lover would be glad to notice its high quality LP issue (180g LP + 45rpm bonus EP) is D2D (recorded direct to disc), can’t imagine vinyl lover would be disappointed (LP was mastered by none other than Bernie Grundman). The SACD, on the other hand, was recorded simultaneously in DSD. The CD layer was just as enjoyable, even playing in my very affordable DVD player was a joy to be have. Wholeheartedly recommended, oh almost forget, an excellently tempo CD for a romantic evening, not dead slow and never too fast.  |
