[#1] Changing Lanes I read many good reviews about this movie before I found it and bought. It is a very recent movie with a good cast (Ben Affleck and Sameul Jackson) so I am very surprised it has not done well in HK. The story is about two very different people (a young, successful lawyer and a poor, black reformed alcholic) who are driving to very important appointments one rainy morning. They have a car accident which disrupts their schedules. From that point on, a series of events (all very believable and real) are triggered off which completely change their lives. It all takes place in just one day, and the speed at which emotions, fear, hate, and vengeance escalate is simply breath-taking. In fact, the pace of events is even more intense and gripping than in the TV series '24' when things already happen at real-time. The most astonishing thing is that you realize all the events in the movie could all happen to YOU yourself ! Also, during the entire movie, all the good & bad aspects of human nature come out. Nobody can actually be labelled the "bad guy" or "good guy" ... in the space of 5 minutes you will find yourself supporting one man, but then change to supporting the other. Incredible ! The finale is simply shocking, and easily one of the best movie endings I have seen in the last 5 years ! I won't tell you any more ... Sam Jackson is always a pleasure to watch, and he gives a remarkably controlled, mature performance. I was previously never a fan of Ben Affleck, but in this movie, he does such a good job of creating a character you can sympathise with that you cannot help but like him. Wonderful acting all round ! The picture on my DVD disc was excellent. There are no flashy special effects or spectacular scenery. But the DVD protrays the one rainy, grey, cold American city morning so well you can almost feel the raindrops on your shoulders. I think it is one of the marks of a good picture quality when you can almost forget you are watching a movie, and actually think you are THERE inside the movie. The sound is also excellent, enhancing the feeling of 'being there'. There are no big bangs or whooses, but the atmosphere created has a proper big city feel to it. |
