|[#1] The Woodsman
Controversial subject matter, but well handled. No cliches. Story makes you sympathize with the character without forcing you to condone his crime.
Atmosphere perfect. Blue and melancholy. Drab, washed out poor suburbs feel complements the mood of the story nicely.
Acting is simply superb. Kevin bacon has always been one of my favorite actors. This is easily one of his best roles. His acting is so subtle, so convincing - no flash, no overacting - simply masterful. He deserves an Oscar, but just like Christian Bale in the Machinist, he won't get it - because Hollywood doesn't approve of the film subject. Shame.
His real-life wife Kyra Sedgwick is OK in this movie but her role feels cut short, leaving her character somewhat underdeveloped. The real surprise is the young Hannah Pilkes. She delivers a performance far beyond her tender years. A touching, moving, mature delivery.
That scene between Walter (Bacon) and Robin (Pilkes) is without doubt the Best Scene in all movies in 2005, and easily one of the top 50 (if not 20) scenes of all time. Impossibly good scripting, acting and subtle directing. You really have to see it.
The DVD is OK. Good picture quality and decent sound - satisfactory rather than breath-taking. The Special features are pretty standard - no surprises but no disappointment. You buy the DVD for Kevin Bacon and the story/movie really.
