| [#20] 1812 ＞＞ The sound quanlity of analog record better than digital record and more natural to original My experience is that this is not absolute; there are lousy analog recordings, and there are also digital recordings that are absolutely amazing. Often, recording techniques and engineering play larger role than the choice of analog and digital. Maybe I had too much time, I just ran through my library and found 5 versions of 1812: 1) 1at Kunzel/Cincinnati, Telarc DDD (bought like 20 years ago) 2) Bernstein/NYPO, Sony Masterworks ADD 3) Dohnanyi/VPO, Decca DDD 4) Pappano/Santa Cecilia (with Chorus), EMI DDD 5) Dorati/Minnesota, Mercury Originals ADD While (2) is great musically speaking, sonically it cannot match any of the other 4 versions. The problem with (5) is that the canon (real canon!) and bell sound exciting and realistic by themselves but do not mash well with the orchestra- the mixing is not that good. (3) captures the VPO in gorgeous sound, and the canon (electronic canon) and bell mix is very well done, but Dohnanyi's choice of tempo just robs much excitement from this version. (1) is justly famous sonically, except that it lacks a bit of warmth relatively speaking, and Kunzel does not deliver as much Russian feeling as the others. (4) has everything, except for a BIG problem- using a bass drum instead of canon is just... lame... So I have no perfect 1812. If only(5) had a better mix, or (4)had canon, or (1) had more Russian flavour... Now I am curious if the mix of (5) is intrinsic in the recording or just a bad execution in the Originals remastering. |
