QUAD ESL speaker

Does anyone know any people in HK to perform checking and service for ESL speaker. The sound level of my of one speaker is much lower. The good news, the charity and tonal balance is still there and we suspect the problem is due to aged electronic part badly needing replacement.

The shipping cost is too high if sending to Germany or UK. Please advise me if you have any idea:

Can't recommand a repair shop. But there is not much in a ESL. You did not say which esl it is. I would check the EHT supply first.

Some electrostatic speakers attract dust which may weigh down the diaphram and reduce the output level. You can try to vacuum it through the grill. Make sure you turn it off overnight to discharge it first.

Thanks, Stevey888,

My ELS are the original ESL57 probably made in year 1971. I guess one the speaker badly needing EHT replacement or some electrical component changes. Can anyone in Hong Kong provide such a service?

The Quad ESLs has a dust cover to prevent the dust from getting to the mylar. If the dust cover is OK, there will be no dust on the mylar. But if it is torn or loose, you will hear rattles when you play music. So I think your dust cover is OK. Visit the web site below to get some suggestions. Sheldon Stokes' site is particularly useful. If you can not do it your self, may be you can find some one to do it for you. I think you shold change the EHT unit for both side if you want to keep the units. I own a pair of ESL63 with the Crosby mod.

I have more thought on your problem. Because you did not get any rattle sound, so the mylar should be OK and do not have holes that are caused by arc-over. I bet the problem is the EHT circuit.

The EHT block is easy to make. If you have the later version with them covered in beeswax, you can just melt it and replace the diodes.
If you have the old one with the block encased in epoxy, you can easily fabricate one with cheap parts.

You can check the voltages if you have a high voltage probe so you can verfiy if thelow output is from the EHT or a leaky panel.

Dear all,

What more can I say, all of you have been very kind indeed giving me advice.

I think I can summarise the action plan:

1) order diodes for the EHT, I think there are 8 on one side.
2) I am not a electrical man, so I need someone to handle the replacment job. Otherwise, I am pretty sure the high volrage will kill me.

Now, any one in Hong Kong who can sell me the diode and perform the service job for me? Should I post the request in second hand market?

How about calling Quad's HK distributor and see if they can point you in the right direction? Someone there must know ESL repair since they have to perform warranty repair for the current ESL lineup.

dkyyu,

Why don't you swap the EHT block between left and right to see the difference, if they are not potted with epoxy. You should change both left and right EHT block diodes and capacitors, no just the diodes.

The diodes and the resistors on the EHT block are the first to drift. The capacitors rarely do but you might as well change them to be sure.

There are 16 diodes, 8 ceramic caps & 2 resistors per block.

Sometimes the voltages in the EHT block are ok but it's a leaky panel that's causing the low sensitivity. Check both.

Thanks a million again for all your valuable advice. Will follow. First thing I must do is to seek for a pair of experienced hands in HK.

One more question, how far you place your ESL speakers apart and any suggestion of speaker distance from rear and side wall in order to obtain the best stereo sound stage and focus.

PS: It appears we have a group of genuine ESL expert and real users in Hong Kong. Hope to meet you and your ESL someday perhaps in very near future.

"Dr.Quad's tips on listener & speaker positioning

How are your Quad rears today? Take some time to make sure the loudspeakers are at least 2 feet from the rear wall & that the outer ends are angled (see drawing below) toward you. This positioning will give smoother bass response in the two octaves from 60Hz-240Hz & better high frequencies, at least on axis. The sound stage between the Quads should be better defined too.

All right then, what about the front of the esl? I like a near field listening position for two reasons: 1) the closer one is to the loudspeaker the less the room intrudes and, 2) the Quad is virtually seamless enabling the listener to move surprisingly close to the speaker's grill. Taking into account the narrow sweet spot (caused by mediocre high frequency dispersion), I prefer 7 feet from the center of each esl to the listener. This dimension is based on a stereo spread of about 6' or so from treble panel to treble panel. I hope this increases the boundaries of Peter Walker's famous "window on the orchestra" for you."

I like them in an equilateral triangle to the listener. Spread them as wide as you can but leaving at least 1M from the side walls and a lot of room behind them. Nearfield is good. They should be pointed straight at you. It is even better if you can measure the top and bottom of the panel of the ESL's to be equal in distance to your ear.

For clean and tight bass, it is better to raise them to a height of 14-18" from the floor. The stock feet makes them too close to the floor and this influences the mid bass a bit. Some say though that the stock feet makes them sound good with classical music.

Happy listening.

Hi, everybody,

Just have an expert visiting my ESL today and the problem was, you are right, the EHT, dropping voltage. The expert also examined the panels, both channels in perfect condition without any black spot found. However, I need to order a pair of EHT for replacement. If possible, I'll find a pair of ESL63 as well for comparison.

The expert told me there is a new ESL design coming out this summer but the ESL and 63 till sound much much better than the new comers including the 988/989 series.

Will report once recovery.

Gingers, rcwy, Tim and all brothers,

I just have both ESL's EHT boards replaced by new units (cost me GBP118) provided from UK One thing Audio. Now the sensitivity resumed and the ESL really sings loud and open with more depth and better stereo image. The ESL sounds like big speaker.

When you have time, call me again for a re-visit.

Dennis,

I got the ESL stand from Italy via eBay. It just arrived recently. I have yet to put the ESL on it. The seller told me that he think it was made in Italy but I think it is most likely coming from UK.

I think they look better than Arcici but not sure if it sounds as good.

Hi Dennis, Gingers, rcwy , Tim and all brothers…..I just happen to browse around the Web tonight and found the discussion you folks had about the Quad ESL57. It was very interesting and I am surprised so many knowledgeable people about Quad ESL in HK. I think I am that guy living in Tseung Kwan O “nicknick” mentioned about. I am glad now you had your ESL57 fixed and all the problems resolved. Nicknick was right. I do had some repair experience on Quad ESL57. I used to own a pair of double quad made by Radio People in Kowloon. 2 of the bass panel had no sound when I acquired them from an English gentleman. After dismantled, I found the mylar was badly torn due to aging. I went thru all the trouble obtaining the right material and making special tools for the repairing. The most difficult part was the mounting of the mylar and the applying of the conductive material. Anyway, it was quite an experience. Nice talking to you folks. Hope to meet you and have music listening session with you some day (with Quad ESL57, of course).

2) Do you mind to advise me the cost including purchase and overseas posting?

The stands weigh about 25kg and costed me near 500 Euro include postage. Just the cost of delivery is near 300 Euro.

3) Any problem fixing your ESL to the stand?

There are special screws for this job.

4) any dimension provided? That is how tall and how wide is the stand.

I have not measure this.

5) Can you adjust the tilting angle and height?

No. Those are fixed.

PCS100,

Glad to meet you in the site. The world is so small. Two months ago, I thought I was playing the ESL alone and oww I knew there were friends out there. I am sure very soon we will be meeting each other ESL lovers. Let's wait for Hon's arrival.

Tim,

Your description is very informative indeed. It's very kind of you sharing with us.

In fact I'd particiapted in bidding the same ESL from UK's seller but finally gave up becasue I bought the speakers from Choice hifi in Central instead. The girl in Choice Hi-fi has been very helpful and nice to customers.

I think the chance of getting a pair from UK seller is very remote but I'll try. Anyway, thanks again.

Hi PCS100,
Learning from other review33 thread that you are using Quicksilver to drive your ESL. I guess you may try switching your Quicksilver to 16 ohm output to best match with ESL's weird impedence curve if there is 16ohm on your Quicksilver.

Have you tried the QUAD II's 15 ohm output? My ESL sounds very loud and dynamic with the 15W Quad II amp alone. A friend of mine has a plan to build the double QUAD ESL system after hearing the ESL. Hope you can give us some advise when later the project in progress.

I am seeking a pair of proper stand for my ESL. Do you use the stock feet or any good sounding tailor made stand you are using?
