[#23554] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Well, sound like one can experience different sound with different type of rectifier, signal and power tubes. :-) |

[#23555] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Indeed, I think most Leak TL12.1 owners here in this thread are too "conservative" towards tube rolling on their amp. For example, nearly all of the gentlemen here stick to KT66/VT75 where EL37 sound clearly better in this amp to my ears. And I also do not think Mullard GZ32 compare well with 52KU, 53KU, Mullard 5U4G and WE274B. |

[#23557] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Large Bottle EL37 surely better than Large Bottle KT66 and small bottle EL37 probably better than small bottle KT66 too! |

[#23558] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Indeed, I think most Leak TL12.1 owners here in this thread are too "conservative" towards tube rolling on their amp. For example, nearly all of the gentlemen here stick to KT66/VT75 where EL37 sound clearly better in this amp to my ears. And I also do not think Mullard GZ32 compare well with 52KU, 53KU, Mullard 5U4G and WE274B. _________________________________________________ Tim, Different type of power tube gives different sound characteristics, very much depended on individual preferences. I like the EL37 on 12.1 good in vocal or simple music. Surprising I do not quite like VT75 on 12.1, it is fast sounding and caused lack of bass extension. Example when playing “Dream of Opera” track number no. 2, around the middle, there is a drum beat and normal GEC KT66 gave the bass extension that I can feel it coming. The VT75 sound fast that it cut short the bass extension. Feel something lacking. Well I must say this is my preference. As to the GZ32, the very early Mullard GZ32 sound very nice on 12.1. It is with inverted cup getter and sees through filament at the center of the plate (you can see from the picture red glowing filament at the center of the plate). I compared it with Mullard 5U4G, GEC U52 etc… The early Mullard GZ32 still sound better to my ears. ![]() |

[#23559] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Indeed, I think most Leak TL12.1 owners here in this thread are too "conservative" towards tube rolling on their amp. ---------------------------- I think I am the one hesitate in tube rolling on the 12.1. I do try VT76. KT66 , ECC33 and EF37 but for the tube rectifier, my heart is too weak to try others. GZ32 is good enough for me though I own a pair of 53KU & 52KU. |

[#23566] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user To Gingers and other TL12.1 owners, Did any of you ever compare the different EF36/EF37A/6J7 input tube? Any tube better than the default Mullard EF36? __________________________________________________ Tim, I have collected the compared the following 7 types Mullard EF37A. 1) Shoulder type red coating black base 2) Shoulder type red coating brown base 3) Straight type red coating black base 4) Straight type red coating fat black base 5) Shoulder type white coating brown base CV358 6) Straight type white coating brown base CV358 7) Straight type white coating brown base CV5080 They do sound different although they are Mullard made EF37A. I like the straight type white coating CV5080 followed by the straight type red coating fat base type. Just brought a pair of GE 6J7, will try when it arrive :-) ![]() |

[#23569] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user The VR56 is a pre-WW2 military receiving pentode valve. The VR prefix in the type designation stands for Valve Receiving. The valve in civilian name is an EF36. This valve was obsolete by the 1960s, and our data sheets show that the EF36 had identical characteristics and pin connections to the EF37 and EF37A. These were all high gain low current intermediate frequency amplifiers in superhet receivers and all featured external metalisation. With their low capacitances they would be useful at radio frequencies as well as IF. It is interesting that as the series progressed, and eventually only the EF37A was produced, the valve had acquired the characteristics of low noise and low michrophany and the EF37A became a standard audio pre-amplifier for professional use before the advent of the EF86. The wide glass tube envelope is 29 mm in diameter and, excluding the IO base pins, is 81 mm tall. http://www.r-type.org/exhib/aaa0087.htm ------------------------------------- I like EF37A :-) |

[#23571] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Gingers |
