| [#5804] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user The Pye HF25 is a KT66 push pull monoblock power amplifier made in 1950s. It gives 25W through the big output transformers. The power supply is choke regulated. It is one of the most powerful English vintage amps, making it more than sufficient to drive a lot of power hungry modern speakers. | [#5816] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user It's indeed a pleasure to visit Ginger's LS3/5a+Leak 'warehouse' again. Ginger's system sounds as macho and punchy as usual, but also more refined than my last visit. Could it be the difference between Chartwell and Spendor? Those Chinese instrumental music was so meaty that I thought I was listening to horn speakers! We compared Quad II, Leak Stereo 50, Pye HF25 driving the Guarneri Homage. Leak 50, either with VT75 or KT77 kills the Quad II instantly imho. Quad II + Guarneri sounds so boring which makes me almost fall asleep. The best match with Guarneri is Leak with KT77 and the 8 ohm tapping sounds better than 16 ohms. HF35 is hardwired to 16 ohms so it's unfair to make any judgement. With B65,33S29, VT75 sounds more balanced than KT77. Later on we also try 33S29,33S30 driving VT75 and I personally think 33S30 is a league ahead of B65. Next we moved on to Ginger's system for the big event, HF25 Vs TL12.1 both with the proper 15 ohms loading. TL12.1, with its signature sinuous harmonics and thick meaty body is indeed addictive. No wonder so many inmates here fell in love with them at first audition. HF25 on the other hand sounds a bit more transparent, more airy, more powerful but lighter in the midrange. For vocal, sonata, chamber... TL12.1 is the obvious choice but for larger scale music, I think HF25 has more spatial definition and more expansive sound stage. Both are excellent vintage amps but I think Leak 12.1 has better transformers and PS caps. |
