[#41] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi Dennis......Nice to hear from you. Unfortunately, the impedence on my QS only up to 8 ohm. I am sure it will sound better with 16 ohm. I owned a reissued Quad II Classic with KT66 and had been using it for more than 6 months. It sounds a little bit different from my QS M60. I must admit it sounds very sweet and detail. specially with vocalist. But I like the sound of QS M60 better. Again, different strokes for different folks! The Cary CAD-300B mono block is also an excellent match for ESL57. I may want to switch back for a 2nd try. The main reason I did not like it before was it sounded too sweet. Like I said, how would you like it if the voice of our Cantonese opera singer Mak Bing Wing or Danny Summer or Doug MacLeod come out from your speaker very sweet? I heard so many good comments about double Quad, so I tried very hard to get one. I was thinking, the regular single Quad is already that good, it probably be perfect if capable of reproducing deep bass and improving the sound dispersion. If that is the case, then I can entertain a group of my friend in my living room. In fact it was not quite so. I got a pair of Double Quad custom made by Radio People. Both the craftsmanship and the outlook was excellent. I listened to it for almost 6 months and finally gave it up. Reason: Too much bass ruin the mids and highs. The improved sound dispersion offsets the sound statege. I no longer can point out the exact position of the singer and each musical instructments. I also can no longer fell the voice created from the muscular throat of a human being. It just sound like a regular box speaker. I think your friend probably will go thru what I went thru. May be even harder due he make his own. I am using a pair of Arcici stand filled with lead shots and very happy with it. Before that, I made a very simple wooden stand and it sounds OK. There are so many different stands for the ESL57. You would have no problem getting one thru eBay. The only problem would be the expensive transportation fee. Well, very nice talking with you. My wife just yelled "Dinner is ready!". I got to go. Talk to you again later my friend! Regards Patrick

[#42] QUAD ESL speaker service Thank you, Patrick, I wish to talk a bit more about the double Quad. Excel's master Yu recently told us that he used to sell few HQD system in early 70s. The HDQ system, supplied from Mark Levinson, comprised of a Hartley 15" woofer (H) double QUad ESL 57 (Q) and 1 decca tweeter (D). Mark Levinson also provided the frame with the supplied system and tailor made a dedicated crossover netowrk for his HQD. The SME's boss also facilitate similar double Quad system (from 57 to 63) as his reference system in UK. A friend of mine, RL, had acquired the decca tweeter and the ML crossover when he was staying in Canada many years ago and he now wants to complete the project to achieve one of the greatest audio excitments as claimed in last century audio history. Frankly to all, we had good listening experience with Focus Audio, SF guarneri, QUAD 989, PMC biggest speakers and many other more world renowned speakers, the ESL57 wins by a large margin between low to mid range (PMC can steal a place in deeper subwoofer bass). The ESL is totally human and transparent. Last but not least, the killing stroke is that the ESL speakers are so cheaper, yes dead cheap price if compared to other great speakers on the world. I paid $10K for my pair ESL in HK. Perhaps much cheaper in UK or in US. To those still looking for a real legend and greatest sound speakers, try one pair of ESL if you can overcome the common humidity and arcing problem. Space is another problem. Patrick, I guess the double Quad system really requires: a. a large listening room, say over 400 to 800 sq feet with tall ceiling height (over 12'?) I guess. b. a really dedicated and rigid stand. c. very demanding room placement. I am helping RL to build the double QUAD system in very near future and do let me find out more to you all when ready. Dennis

[#44] QUAD ESL speaker service Dennis......I think I know which double Quad master Yu is talking about. It was actually built by Mark Levinson using a metal frame with the Decca tweeter installed in the gap between the upper and lower ESL57s. The whole panel can tilt to adjust the sound dispersion. I'll see if I can get a picture for you. I was very desperate to own one at that time. The one built by Radio People in HK I used to own is now in my friend's living in San Francisco. I sold it to him about 7 years ago. He is also a very knowledgeable person about electrostatic speakers. He built his own before he bought mine. I'll ask him if he would like to share his experience with us. A lot friend warn me to watch out for the humidity in HK. I have been leaving my ESL 57 on all the time (except out of town for days) even during the worst period without any problem. The normal voltage for the stator is 7K volt for the tweeter and 5K volt for the bass. But they are protected by a sealed dust cover to prevent dust from getting into the mylar, so as the humidity. I would not worry about that unless the dust cover is torn. Replacing the dust cover is very easy and the material is available any where. Any body handy with some tools will be able to do the job. So I don't think humidity is a problem if your ESL 57 is in good condition. You are correct on the double Quad. Room size and Placement of the double Quad plays a key role. I have tried my double Quad in my huge living room with a cathedral ceiling up to 18 foots height. I have also tried it in my family room about 15 x 25 foots with normal ceiling height of 8 foots. The wooden frame of my double Quad was quite rigid and have wheels. That makes it much easier to move around for the best spot. I can not say it dose not sound good. It sounds good but not to the level of what I expect. But my friend who bought it from me likes it. I hope he still owns it because it was more than 7 years ago. I will ask him to e-mail me a picture to show you. Regards Patrick

[#50] QUAD ESL speaker service Morning PCS100, You have own both huge listening and living room for your ESL and your system must be sounding pretty well. I am a vinyl freak using LS3/5s and just happened to switch to electrostatics speakers recently. If you have time to tell us more about ESL and your listening experience, please feel free to share. I happened accidently pop into a hifi shop along the Tottenham Court road in London 20 years ago. I was shocked when hearing a pair of ESL63 driving by Quad's own solid state amp. I could afford nothing at all at that time because I was just a student and I knew I was going to own a pair of electrostatics speaker at least once in my life. Now the dream comes true and I am so pleased with the sound from the ESL. I have sold all my box speakers now but still leaving a pair of old LS3/5a at home. Though the LS3/5s lacks the transparency of ESL but strangely enough, it stills sounds pretty attractive when playing my few favourite violin music. A nice day, everybody Dennis

[#51] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi all, I am an LS3/5A user as well and recently stumbled on a pair of ESl-57's. Here's a link to my restoration story (page 1 of 11): http://64.177.144.55/moz/mysystem/esl57/esl57_p1.htm

[#52] QUAD ESL speaker service Dear mozilla, What a great and sentimental story, with blood and tears. No doubt, your effort will pay off well. Your EHT is epoxy type, they must be an early type model. I guess the early one could sound better. My esl serial numbers are 26463 and 26467. I'd just replaced my EHT with Onethingaudio's design, a common ageing problem. I guess most esl are not up to spec but they sound too good even the users would not bother or realize the problem yet. Hope to see your esl on new stands soon. Any problem using the stock feet apart from being too low from the floor? Regards Dennis

[#54] QUAD ESL speaker service Congratulation ! powercord. Please take your time to set up your ESL 57. Please be reminded placement of the speaker and room acoustic plays a key role. Be ready to addict to a whole new world of natural sound. Please let us know the outcome. mozilla......Thanks for sharing your restoration story with us. It was a good one! You are very professional. You were lucky that the diapramg in your ESL 57 is in good working condition. Or there may be a lot more works involve with the mylar and stators. I like the picture in your story. espcially the one showing a red high voltage probe. That looks like the exact one I used on my double Quad repairing project. Is it a FLUKE 80K-6 HV probe? I've been listening to the ESL 57 for over 12 years. Will be more than happy to share with you my experience with ESL 57. Regds Patrick

[#55] QUAD ESL speaker service Thanks Patrick, Please share with us your experience with them especially with placement coz I am still experimenting at the moment. I am having stands made at 14-15" high. They can be tilted so that I can have the panels pointed straight at me. They are now about 6-7' apart (center to center) and aimed straight at me at an equilateral triangle setup.

[#58] QUAD ESL speaker service My ESL 57 is mounted on Arcici stand raised 16" high. I am quite happy with it because I can make use of the space underneath. I put my amp and some CDs under the speaker and it still looks good. I no long own that fancy big house now. It was back in San Francisco. I moved back to HK and now my listening room is ridiculously small. It is about the size of my bathroom (7'x8'). But even more rediculous is - the ESL 57 sound good in such a small room! Due to the space constrain, I don't have much choice for the speaker placement but to place it as close to the conner as possible. Acoustic was bad. I can hear echo if I clap my hands real loud. But 4 triangle shape of sound absorbent put up onto the 4 ceiling cornner resolved my problem. The sound quality now is quite near the sound in my S.F. listening room which about 11'x13'. Sound stage still appear accurately from my far left to far right. Singer stands right in the center in front of me singing without a microphone. My experience told me that ESL 57 sound best: 1. At the sound level of 75 to 80 dBs. 2. In a mid size or small enclosed room rather than a big hall. 3. Must have backing behind the listening seat. 4. Must sit at the center. It is a one man speaker. I am very happy with my system now and have been enjoying it almost every evening.

[#60] Selling my pair of QUAD ESL-63 I'm selling, rather reluctantly, my pair of QUAD ESL-63. Some of the panels have been damaged by humidity. I was thinking of fixing the suckers myself but ended up buying a pair of ESL-989. Interested parties please contact me via review33's interface.
