While highly appreciate Chi's self-exploration learning, I have a different learning path in my early stage of learning photography.

Those years I learnt a lot from friends known in the internet and met subsecquantly in outings in HK, for examples, the now recessive "Photo-100-fun" social group elsewhere, and the now changed themes "ETSC & ETRC" group here in R33. We went out shooting together portraits, lotus flowers, flowing streams, moving objects, sports games, etc.

Observe others' successes and learn a lot. Thus, a few good friends together are a good teacher. But you have to be ready to ask questions (try no stupid ones) and be ready to listen to (some might appear to be mockeries). On many occasions a hint of words saved me a lot of time reading/digesting manuals, etc. Do treasure good occasions and create good moods for communications.

Since you are now in the UK, your learning path could be very different.
