To me, there is no doubt that the LSU/10 is the mother of all "BBC Monitors". It was created because BBC could not find any commercial speakers (including those from Tannoy and Lowther) that met the BBC technical standard/requirements.

And this started the tradition of BBC design and built their own speakers in-house.

Things changed in the late 1960's and early 1970 with LS3/5A and LS3/6 when the BBC decided to "outsource" the manufacturing process to outside firms such as Rogers and Chartwell and to allow such firms to produce commercial models under the BBC licenses.

That "outsourcing" proved to be very difficult to the commercial firms as they found it unexpectedly hard to meet the BBC specifications.

It was believed that BBC had made various compromises with the later models so that commercial production can continue.

You deserve a R33's PhD for your studies into BBC speakers and amps. :)

I understood from Limage that the Rogers version LS3/6 is best sounding amongst different production BC1's. Any chance to hear that Rogers? (and will be fair to the speakers in hear in Limage's audio room (or mine if don't mind).

It was really sad to see the BBC giving-up their in-house design after the LS5/9 in the early 1984.

The LS5/12 was actually an "unauthorised" design within the BBC!

But I read on the Yahoo LS3/5A Group that one member is actually writing a MBA thesis on how intellectual property was transferred from the public sector to the private sector using the BBC LS3/5A as example!

Our friend, Karl Jones, who collects BC1 and LS3/6 once told me that he cannot find any sonic difference between BC1 and LS3/6.

To me, we should at least compare the following to figure out which version is the best:

- Early BC1 with blue alnico driver
- Later BC1 with ferrite driver
- BC1 Germany
- Rogers LS3/6
- Stirling LS3/6 Mk2

That seems to be a study on public admin or business admin, rather than a study on the audio industry. The scope of study is too narrow to qualify a pass in my view. :)
