| [#61] Passive Pre amp 同好會 Hi, I'm also an owner of Music First's classic with MkII silver transformers since Jan. Prior to that I was using a Nagra PLL. I would say that the MF preamp has a much better transparency in the high freq range, very amazing!!!!! To put it into context, I'm using the Sun Audio VT-25 amp to drive a pair of ALTEC Granada. I am very interested on the Ming da(MeiXing) Md-6 Dual Mono Passive Pre since there were quite a lot of excellent review recently and the price is hard to resist...Anyone can share why there are 2 transformers on top? | [#67] Passive Pre amp 同好會 Some friednly reminders for potential passive pre-amp users: 1) please consider to use the shortest inter connectors, i suppose cable over 1 m will impose high capacitance which may adversely affect the performance of passive pre system. For info, I am using 0.5m betweem by phono and Music First. 2) ensure your amp has high sensitivity input. For reference, my power amp is rated at 70w/ channel with maxi input at 0.85m . My MC output is 0.4mv and phono amo has 64db gain. My SACD player output is 4V when using xlr connection. So far so good. 3) if possible, use sensitive speakers. Unfortunately, I can;t follow this rule as my speaker is measured at 86 db. Have fun |

| [#73] Passive Pre amp 同好會 Hi stanm, All spec except the 1.1V input sensitivity of your power amp look reasonable to adopt a passive pre in your system. It's not a big deal if you are willing to play the volume control between 10:00am and 3:00pm. Please consider the best of the best, The Music First Audio, from UK. The Music First Audio is a true balance pre and you really appreciate the benefit it if your power amp also operates in same manner. Please also consider to use high quality and shortest interconnectors throughout. |

Sure, you are always welcome BUT please wait for another 3 weeks as my home is now under a small construction and I will re-arrange all gears. By the time it is ready, my new Medea+ should also arrived. MFA Reference has a huge difference when compare with Classic MKII. I still have a MKII at home and we can arrange AB testing. The most impressive part on MFA reference is size of the sound stage + micro dynamic + 3D images of instruments. |

The MK2 demonstrates to me it's a clear winner when I upgraded from MK 1. I really really look forward to hearing the improvement between MK2 and Reference. Latest news, the MFA has made minor configuration change to their TVC product this year claiming improvement made. So check the manufacture date (best in or after May 2011) if you are buying new from the manufacturer. MFA also informed me they will roll out a baby Reference Pre which is function scale down version of their flagship model at lower price. Stay tuned. |

I don't mind to turn the volume up when using a passive pre but I was wondering if it might loss in dynamic and the density of sound when compare with active pre. I have never had a chance to borrow one and plug into my set up so I don't know if it works in real. So I guess I will start with something cheaper like less than $15K. I am aim at something with XLR in/out with the benefit of higher output. Is there other cheaper option out there besides the top grade MFA ? Thanks a lot. Stanley |
