There is a two months lag behind my initial planning. In the last few weeks, I have listened to more than 10 pairs of speakers. Most are higher than 100k in their price tags. Initially, I am afraid I would find my M30(LE) inferior to all these expensive speakers and will lose interest in listening to my M30(LE). Surprising, most of the time when I back home and listened to my M30(LE), I just find I am loving my M30(LE) even more. Only 3 pairs of those speakers give me the urge / eager to change my speaker. Or I should list all the speakers I have listened to in last few weeks. They are: 1. ATC tower 50A and 100A 2. Audio Note AN-E/Lexus signature 3. Avalon Indra 4. ADAM Tensor (partial active) 5. Pioneer S1EX 6. Sonus Faber Guanarie Momentos 7. Venture CR-8 signature 8. Verity Audio Parsifal Ovation 9. Quad ESL 2805 10. Marten design Bird 11. Dynaudio Sapphire 12. Westlake Tower 6 13. | [#70] Harbeth M30 ( 30th signature limited editi Hi brothers, After listened to more than 10 pairs of speaker, although all are much much expensive than M30(LE), only 5 pairs give me the feeling of upgrade rather than changing taste. And three of them really make me fall in love with. The first pair is ATC tower 100A. I have listened to this pair of speaker for 3 times. It has similar sound characteristic as M30(LE). If you like Harbeth monitor series, I think you will like the sound of ATC. I can just simply apply all my description of M30(LE) to A100, it is just to a higher level. If M30(LE) score 80, I think A100 will score 95 at least. So, although they have similar characteristic, they are just products of different levels, very clear. I have also tried ATC tower 50 once. The price different between 50 and 100 is 20k. But A100 is much more better than 50 in all aspects, not just the base. Tower 50 will kick off M30(LE) definitely, but their different in performance is not as great as their different in price suggested. To me, tower 50 will score 86 at most. Yes, I know, hifi is always like this. My concern: 1. the size of A100, it will like installing two medium size refrigerators in the living room. It is quite difficult to persuade my wife to accept them. 2. will the base too much for my listening room? Yes, A50 will solve these problems. But I know I will still itchy to upgrade to A100 if I buy A50. And I am afraid I will miss A100 and just can't enjoy A50 if I buy A50. So a advice to brother who want to buy ATC A50, just don't listen to A100, otherwise you will fall into a very difficult situation like me. Tomorrow will talk on other two pairs of speaker. |

| [#73] Harbeth M30 ( 30th signature limited editi Hi mike and mahi, Thank you for your feedbacks. The 2nd pairs is Avalon Indra For Avalon Indra, I think it is a speaker of no complaint. Although its size is not big, even smaller than ATC 50A (I think), its base is very good in term of both quality, quantity and speed. For the sound stage, imaging and 'layering', I think there is no need for me to elaborate as this is the well known strength of Avalon. For mid-range and treble, it is also very attractive. It is very coherence. But you may think it should sounds that good for its asking price. But even I have very high expectation before my audition, it can still impress me so much so that I think it is one of the best speaker I have heard in last few weeks. My concern 1. Certainly its price 2. I also need to upgrade my amplifier to 312, so it will be a huge investment if I buy Indra. The 3rd pairs of speaker is Quad ESL2805. It costs less than 60k. I think it is the cheapest speaker I have listened to in the last few week. But it is among the best sounding speakers regardless of the price. So it is the king of best-buy. It is my first time to listen to ESL speaker, I am shocked by what I heard. ATC make everything seem to be real by its high sound density and air surrounding the image, but ESL just make every performer seem alive without the need of high sound density. And the speaker is simply seem not exist at all. Its ability to disappear is even higher than Avalon, the speaker well known in this aspect. Incredible. No matter vocals, violin or piano, all sound alive, not just real. The replay of orchestral works is also excellent, very detail and give you all the 'layers'. Some people say its base is a bit suboptimal. But I find ESL 2805 has quite a good base actually. Its base is better than M30(LE) and SF guannarie momentos at least. And at least at the same level as Parsifal Ovation. I find it is enough for me. If there is no need to take wife's factor into consideration, I think I buy it right a way after my audition. My concern 1. it has very large surface area. My wife is strongly oppose. Actually, only SF Guanarie Momentos can received my wife's approval. Anyway I will take the second round of audition in the coming 2 weeks. The candidates including, 1. ATC 100A 2. Indra 3. ESL 2805 4. SF Guanarie Momentos 5. maybe Proac Response D80 6. or any suggestion Will keep you informed once there is any progress. Thanks. |

After audition of Quad ESL, I know why it wins awards from Stereo Sound, Stereophile and the absolute sound. But I can't find any local review. Is it strange? And also few more words on M30(LE). I repeatedly see some brothers comment that the sound stage of M30 is flat. I think this is wrong, at least in the case for M30(LE). In my home, the sound stage is very wide and deep. Actually, this is the comment given by one local hifi magazine writer. |

I listened many different kind of speakers, include Harbeth, Burmester, ASW, Quad, Dynaudio, Proac, Mcintosh, Merlin, Spendor... in Electronics show. The speakers make me feel good are, 1) Quad ESL-2905 (Speaker like disappear only music play in front of you) 2) Opera Callas bookshelf (not in market now, but very good soundstage and like disappear) 2) Avalon (Driven by Accuphase) 3) Harbeth SHL-5 (Smooth and natural sound) 4) Others - Proac is OK, Sliverline is very punchy For the rest, I do not like Dynaudio tweeter sound, seems too cold to me. I prefer Seas driver sound. And for some speakers using carbon fiber for their cabiet, none of them I like. The sound is too cold and the sound is to directional as well. LFYeung |
