[#145] 古CD機同好會 Hi, Mike. I am so happy that you start such a good thread. For Meridien, I mean the PRO-MCD. Great musical machine. I do mean some of the lately noticed technology CAN help old CDP to better perform. Clock is definitely an area that can improve. Some of the older PSU mods help a lot too (as noted in Jung's Pooging series in TAA). A lot of the newer 24/192 CDP are really computers! They are using DSP and use software to do the D/A conversion. So you open up a CDP or a DAC, it is almost empty and very light, especially when used with switching power supply together. Not a pleasant feeling for an old school guy like me that like heavy means good. I really don't know what's wrong with SACD players when playing CDs. Maybe the laser mechanism? I think lots of others also prefer the old City Hall. And one thing that distinguishes music from hifi is the warm and touching feeling generated. And by that time you forget about resolution, soundstage, etc. After all these years, my personal priority is tonal banance. And that's why I can tolerate a lot of mono recordings. And afterall, can I find stereo recordings of Caruso? And tonal balance is an area modern hifi may not always win vintage.

[#151] 古CD機同好會 my cdp has a very strange transport. which is similar to the pioneer turntable system that CD's data side face upward. on top of it, it has a ceremic weight to give absolute stability to the TT. To me it's like a poor man's VRDS ![]()

[#154] 古CD機同好會 This is the most interesting thread I 've read recently in this forum. No BS and attacks. Yukclee and Mike Lee offer lots of insightful opinions, which I fully agree. Yes I like old cd players too, in fact still own a couple, like Philips CD101, early Marantz (model forgot), Meridien 206 (1 bit not my favorite), Rega Planet metal, Pioneer T-07S (claimed to be improved versin of T-07A), and Technics SLP1200. Its really interesting to find every player has quite a significant different sonic character. Rega has the best look. Technics is a design overkill and its top end of the freqency spectrum is really open. Pioneer sounds best of all to my ears and the built is sturdy. Philips is fun to listen once in a while. However I aint listening to above cd players at the moment. My current set up consists of Forsell Air Reference + my new toy Audio Synthesis DAX (first impression the DAX sounds suprisingly GREAT and their appearance turns out to be a perfect match). Out performs my audio note DAC 1x in terms of sheer musical enjoyment by quite a large margin. I 've a passable Lp set up at home. Yes at times it sounds better than CD. But I 'm just too god damn lazy. And I enjoy listening music through CD as much as through Lp. Answering alexhifi question re Pioneer 2nd hadn price. For T-07 I think it falls within 3000 - 4000 $ range. That was how much I paid. Current market may drop somewhat due to age? Dont know about T09. Would like to have a chance to listen to this monster.

[#158] 古CD機同好會 hi-end CD player once flourished in the 90s......and manufacturers came up with many different great ideas. That was reflected in the design of inventive original transport systems. However, nowadays CD players are dominated by OEM suppliers that contribute same parts to various manufacturers.

[#159] 古CD機同好會 Julies, Same as PD-T07, there is second versions of PD-T95 (same as PD-T09, I believe), called PD-T95S. And, there is a third version of PD-T95, that one is only a transport. I have listened PD-T07 in Mainland China for few minutes, this is truly good sounding compared to another new CD player in the same place.

[#160] 古CD機同好會 I've recently read a review in an old 1985 issue of Stereophile. Here is its excerpt about the then blooming CD format that I'd like to share with you guys under the generally grey SACD sky now: "imagine the harm that will be done to any effort to make CD a fully mature medium when Japan throws another half-developed ringer into the high end. Imagine the quality of the recordings that will emerge when already-confused engineers try to produce the proper audiophile quality master for 8 mm, CD, analog record, and DAT. Will they even try? How many people will be driven to video by yet another high-end format of uncertain initial quality - and the high-end feuds that will follow?" Do you think we can say similar things after all the 20 years with another "blooming" and "exciting" new medium? While we ponder the issue, let's have a look to one of the good old CD players ... :) ![]()
