[#141] What are you listening to? ( classical mus After the journey to Spain, Czech and Russian, I choose two romantic work from central europe last night, the famous Brahms's symphony No. 4 my beloved conductor: Carlos Kleiber ; and a not so famous but lovely work: Mendelssohn's string Quartet. Kleiber 's Brahms is the only version I have on shelf of this great work, so I am not in a good position to comment on his view, but ever since I have acquire this version 10 years ago, I considered it as gold standard and never question his approach. I am acquiring Harnoncourt's set of complete Brahms symphony, hope that this challenging conductor can bring something new to this well known music. ![]()

[#146] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Just listened to Leitner, under-rated conductor mostly remembered for the conductor in Kempff's stereo Beethoven cycle. Excellent Bruckner 6th, stunning Hartmann symphony (demo sound in the Hartmann). Peter Maag, yes, both Mendelssohn pieces have never been surpassed. ![]()

[#148] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, I revisit english music, Elgar immediately come to mind. His symphony no 1 and 2 cannot be more different, his symphony No.1 was romantic while his symphony No.2 was quite modern in style. I finally choose for his symphony no.1 in order aviod disturbing my neighbour in my late night listening session. Solti as usual was very energetic, fine though the recording was, it pale when compare to today's standard. ![]()

[#157] What are you listening to? ( classical mus "How would you compare Julia Fischer' Bach to say Perlman or Hiliary Hahn?" CKM sorry for not getting back early. Fischer's Bach is very different from that of Perlam. Fischer's playing is very composed and well-mannered, with an obvious authentic style influence. Her tempo is always constant, but she gives enough room for the music to breathe and develop. Overall, the playing leaves a solemn remark. In comparison, Perlman plays with his typical brilliant and sweet tone with vibrato which sounds a touch too romantic than I would like. I have not listened to Hiliary Hahn's Bach. I have only listened to her Paganini's violin concerto no.1. Comparing Perlman's Paganini's violin concerto no.1 with Hahn's, I'd say that Perlman plays with a lot more freedom, wit and spontaneity, whilst from Hahn's playing, it is obvious that the piece has been studied thoroughly with every detail taken care of.

[#158] What are you listening to? ( classical mus I've bought this today. Probably not the most recognised mahler conductor (or conductor in general), but what prompted me was Barenboim's Beethoven set recorded a few years ago. I find the sound of the Staatskapelle Berlin very special. The orchestra plays with much less brilliance than a modern orchestra, with a dark and very urgent tone. The result is amazingly convincing. In particular, in the Beethovens', Barenboim placed the violins on both sides with cellos next to the first violins, and doublebasses behind the cellos. This produced a very concentrated string sound that makes each very familiar piece sounds afresh. I find this very interesting. ![]()

[#160] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Thank you minpin for your valuable comparison and input. I remember I attend a concert at City Hall in which Hiliary Hahn played Brahms violin concerto with HKPO, I found her tone sweet, polite and with classical restraint, I feel that she must be a excellent Bach player. I hope I have chance to listen to Julia Fischer in the near future too ( only if there is also a CD version, I don't have SACD player) . But my all time favorite must be Grumiaux ![]()
