| [#1] Western Electric amps and associated equipments Dear WE fans, I open a new column here for you and for myself to express views and experience on old WE stuff. We all know WE is not common in the Hong Kong hi-fi scene,I guess mystery is the better word to describe its appearance in this circle.Not until recently, we see some articles, reviews etc appear in the Chinese hi-fi magazines,still these only represent opinions of the very few who are well off enough to put them together in thier living rooms,in order to further enlarge the WE circle and for new comers to know more about this good things, your contribution is most welcome. |

| [#6] Western Electric amps and associated equipments There is no magic in the original schematic,very similar in structure as the WE41,42 nd 46 type amps. I believe the magic is in the power supply.Mr Wu's clone 44 uses WE274 as the rectifier, its a smashing success as we all know, buyers of this preamp came all over the world including Taiwan, mainland China, Korea and the States, they are so proud not only to show off but to surprise their friends how good this preamp can sound. In september, when I decided to get rid of my WE collections, I heard the clone 44, twice and I was impressed, so impressed that I requested Mr Wu to make one for me, since I have many WE original stuff including tubes, trans,resistors and caps which I intended to sell them all in the first place, some can be used here, such as the RET109A, WE wirewound 38 series resistors,NOS 40-50's Mallory caps. AS the other clone 44 preamps, Mr Wu used 274 as the rectifier, dual-mono design, so its a 4-pieces preamp, looks promising, sounds good, really good but still there is room to improve. I'll continue the story later. |

| [#12] Western Electric amps and associated equipments Mr Wu, It is quite seldom for WE amps(before 40's) to have a volume control incorporated into the same machine, have you measured the frequency range of this trans(use as a pot), I guess its quite narrow judging from the other trans used in the 44A amp,otherwise its worth a try. |

| [#15] Western Electric amps and associated equipments Very nice 124, good for WE755A, though its rating is about 12 watts, WE124 can drive difficult loads with ease. I miss the golden sound of 124, and I liked to use Mallory old FP type caps which sounds more lively than those made by Spraque.There are 2 resistors(100K and 47K if I remember right) in the negative feedback circuit which is sound critical, the very old IRC metal rod type sounds best, I still keep some of this type IRC resistors for future use. |
