Tube tester is of course the best way but a more primitive method is when you tune the bias and it does not response and stay at a unreasonably level then the tube should be no longer alive

I found the sound already deteriorated to intolerable level long b4 it's dead.

Some people here suggested keep the original cheap tube or just prepare a pair of cheap tube of the same model, for 2 purposes.
1) if something wrong happened in that tube gear, that pair of cheap tubes can help one to confirm the source of problem;
2) to serve your purpose......... swapping with that pair of cheap tubes to cross-check the sound of your tube-in-service.

Just my 2 cents.
