[#184] QUAD ESL speaker service Looks like the condition of your panel is worst than I thought. The torn is so big just like there is no dust cover protection at all. The size of the burnt holes is also bigger than I thought. I bet the diaphragm behind the stator must have big torn. I would conduct a complete overhaul to the panels regardless the condition of the EHT blocks. A gentleman in the U.S. posted a detailed Web of his experience of re-mounting the diaphragm. It may be helpful but I have to look for the web address.

[#185] QUAD ESL speaker service rsbn589, Oh my dear. I am afraid your panel looks like over. Is the middle one, that is the treble panel, suffering this problem? There is one guy in eBay selling a pair of 2nd hand ESL57 treble panel. If you intend to replace the panel, I guess your EHT would also need replacement as well. Your spare EHTs look good enough with diode and capacitors for replacing the both old EHT blocks. You should be able to find out more of the EHT replacement on internet. If you need the ESL technician man, Mr Kung, to help you replacing the panel, I shall send you his number. Dennis

[#189] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi, dear all, I only realised the imbalamce anti-skating force of my Linn arm not until I'd changed my KT66 to VT75 on Quad II and also TFK X7 rib plate to Mullard M8137 on Quad 22 to drive my ESL today. Here comes the story: The anti skating calibration of most Linn arm is usually inaccurate. The standard Linn cartridge tracking is 1.75 g. The anti skating reading on my Linn arm needs to go up high to 2.4 to enable the cartridge staying steadily on a playing plain LP record. As I never believe this checking method, so I adjust the anti skating force of my Linn arm something between to 2.2 as a safety measure. After swapping all tubes to VT75 and M8137, I immediately realized the sound of most playing records had become abnormal: 1) the vocal from left hand channel was so burr and sound relatively much softer than the right channel. 2) The right channel sounds a bit on the bright side. I did not know what went wrong but incidentally when I adjusted the anti skating force to 2.4, all resumed with better focus and more detail coming out from the ESL. What I am suggesting is that the ESL is so revealing, more revealing than what we thought. Given with the matching amp, goiod front end and properly maintaining the speaker to full spec, the ESL speakers should set your system performance to a new height. Would you believe it?

[#190] QUAD ESL speaker service If you were an ESL user employing QUAD 22 for pre-amplification, I would urge you to try the Mullard M8137. Only those toast plate M8137 with old Mullard logo marks "made in gt Britain" on the front works. I mean "gt" not "great". The rear should mark with chicken feet l/ symbol, KD and CV4004. Have a try and you will understand why I disposed all my Mullard long plate and TFK X7. It should be selling GBP50 to GBP80 for a pair on ebay. This also applies to Matisse Reference pre-amp.

[#194] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi, powercord, I'll show you the M8137's chicken feet mark on Saturday as I don't have a DC at the moment. Would Timtube help to elaborate more on M8137 and their history? rsbn589 I'd also tried the Mullard M8137 on Matisse Ref pre-amp as well. The M8137 is far more human and natural than the more expensive TFK and tungsgram. I guess HC Lee from vinylparadise.com will share my view. He has got tonnes of various expensive X7 but he simply cannot live with his pre-amp without plugging one chicken feet M8137 tube until he found another better choice. He told me his current best match is Mullard M8137 (line amp part) + TFK 803s (phono part).

[#198] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi Powercord, (what's your name?) Hon Lau is me. I live in England but I will be in HK tomorrow seeing my family! I will see Tim Yung, John Keung, Richard Yim and hopefully many others. I remember Dennis who is the chap from US running a pair of ESL57, right? I love to hear them in HK. I have owned two pairs of ESL57 a few years ago, but they were just too damn big for my room! I only listened to them for a few hours, then stored them in my bedroom. I always said that is the best 400 pounds I have spent each time because listening to the ESL57 is such a wonderful experience. I am always tempted to buy another pair, but I know that I will have to sell them again, unless I become rich and am able to buy a big house! Regards Hon

[#200] QUAD ESL speaker service Hi, Hon, It's my pleasure meeting you. I should be available on Monday or Tuesady morning or Friday. I shall give John Keung a call to fit into your schedule. We had a big ESL party today at my place. Linn LP12 + QUAD 22 / Fisher 400cx2 + QUAD II / Graaf OTL amp driving ESL57. I am new to ESL and I must confess that my ESL system is badly needing more attention on sound stage and the good news is my ESL is in good condition. I guess getting a proper stand for the ESL will fit in the job. I met two ESL experts in the party. I mean we should call them expert if we called ourself the user. I truely believe you will regret if you miss meeting powercord (Patrick). I have never met such an knowledgeable ESL expert before. We frined of mine, Richad, is planning a triple QUAD project. Should time allow in your schedule, I'll take you to visit his private hifi room in Kowloon Bay. I understand John, Richard, Tim are nice gentlemen. Please enjoy every moment in Hong Kong. See you soon. Best regards from a man still struggling with his ESL57 Dennis
