[#1983] Quad ESL speaker Got to turn up the M7's volume to about 12 o'clock position. I have also got a Matisse Reference. I opine that M7 is suiting the Quad better because the M7 sounds more "sunshine" than Matisse which has a touch more laid back. Of couse the tubes play a major factor.

[#1984] Quad ESL speaker Mda, Yeah, I have the same experience with Matisse when connecting to QUAD II. Will try M7, the Fisher pre-amp is too rare to find.

[#1985] Quad ESL speaker CP, Turn the Quad into 15ohms this morning. Still froggy compared witht the OTL. However I think the direct comparison between 2 is not the major point, just a different musical enjoyment.

[#1986] Quad ESL speaker just a different musical enjoyment ______________________________________ mda, Quite right. Direct comparison is more for curiosity. I had the feeling that M7 and Quad II might not make a perfect match. I agree with Dennis that Quad 22 and Quad II are born for each other. I have also heard so many times the advice that Fisher 400CX/CX2 makes a good match but I haven't really tried. In the past I used a Conrad Johnson preamp with the Quad II driving Harbeth. By memory, I had the most beautiful "Butterfly Lovers" with that setup. But it would still be very interesting to compare other preamps directly with the Quad 22 as reference.

[#1987] Quad ESL 63 speaker Teardown and Work Progress Report of ESL63 conducted by CP and Patrick. PANELS Findings- Further dismantle reveal that there are a lot more work than expected. Almost all the glue holding the stators to the supporting grid have dried out and become loose on all panels. Causing the stators separated from the supporting reinforcement grid, and actually touching the mylar diaphragm, resulting discharge of voltage and in turn over heat and damage the electronic section. That’s the main cause of ticking and fizzing noises from all the panels. Dried glue chips found all over inside the panel assembly. A sign of aging, which is quite normal for that age. CP is of the opinion that if all the panels for ESL63 were installed at more or less the same time, then the rest of the ESL63 on the market would have the same panel problem. Remedy- All panel assembly on Feikeung and Alan’s ESL63 (A total number of 16 panels) needed to be completely dismantled, remove all the loose dried particles. Thorough cleaning of all contact points between the stators and the supporting grids with Acetone solution and re-glue them using Epoxy 30 minutes compound. The diaphragm of all the bass panels (a total number of 8 pieces) needed to be completely remounted with Dupont 5 micron, type A, tensilied Mylar PET polyester film. The diaphragm in some of the tweeter panels may still be in good condition. We will only rebuild the torn ones. I have made a mylar stretch table especially for this diaphragm job. Will post some picture to share with you folks. New dustcovers will be installed using 3M polyester storm window repair film. ELECTRONICS Findings- The protection circuit in one of the speaker seems to be in fault. Sparks visible on one of the bass panel was not detected by the antenna of the protection circuit inside the sparker, and hence did not trigger the shutdown operation of the speaker. Further diagnosis will be needed to locate the fault. The EHT unit and the audio section seems working fine. However, due to the age, the parts may be tiring and may need a partial or complete rebuild. Remedy- Further diagnosis the protection circuit. Replace the faulty parts. An electronic cigarette lighter may be used to generate sparks to test of the spark arrest protection shutdown system. The speakers will be as good as new after all the above work is done and will be expected to serve well for a couple of decades. Thanks
