[#2048] Quad ESL speaker Recording engineer develops everlasting glass CD ________________________________________________ The transparent glass CD in its special case. A Japanese recording engineer has developed the world's first glass CD guaranteed not to warp, distort and of a beautiful design, according to its maker. Music critics who have tried out the CD said that it's outstanding and virtually like listening to a live performance. But high quality music to last forever comes at a price -- 98,700 yen apiece to be exact -- as glass CDs have to be made by hand. "I wanted to make a CD that could be passed on to grandchildren," the glass CD's inventor, Suenori Fukui, said. Fukui, 60, noticed that glass was a great receptor of sound and decided to try and create a CD from the material. He spent a decade developing the glass CD together with Mitsugu Ikeda, a technician from a company called Tomie Media Solutions. Information on the glass CD is read by laser. Because existing plastic CDs are not completely transparent, information on them cannot be read perfectly. They are also susceptible to bending or warping if left in sunlight or humid areas, which leads to sound distortion. As glass CDs are completely transparent, information on them can be read perfectly, improving sound quality. They are not affected by heat or humidity and remain in perfect condition forever. N & F Label, seller of the glass CDs, has put its first glass CD on sale. It is a recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Air on G String." Music critic Sachio Moroishi was delighted with the sound quality. "If they make a few more, the price will probably go down, but this has the potential to change the world of audio media," he said. Tests of glass CDs will soon be carried out in Tokyo at Ishimaru Denki in Akihabara and Tower Records in Shibuya. Mainichi Daily News, Japan 21st Oct 2006 ![]()

[#2049] Quad ESL speaker Dennis, Here comes the Jim Smith sequel: "Jim Smith continues with his help in providing free, easy to implement system tweaks that make a difference : 5.) Don't forget to listen at different seating heights. If you have the ability to experiment with different seating heights, do so. Sometimes raising or lowering your listening position slightly can produce a more neutral and more alive sound. There are generally two or three reasons why this may be true for your system. First, it's not uncommon for standing waves to affect your sound vertically. For much the same reasons as we discussed the change in sound as you move forward or back slightly in your selected listening seat, these same basic laws of physics apply vertically as well. Note that if you do plan to change the listening position's height, be sure that it's standing waves you're hearing and not different time arrival and related crossover/phase relationships from the drivers! A way to check that aspect is to slightly tilt the speaker backward or forward to see if what you're hearing is predominantly an audible effect from the relationship of the speaker's vertical height/angle to the listening seat. You should do this anyway, whether or not you change your seat height. With planar speakers, it's equally important. That's because, apart from standing waves, there's another issue to be considered (we'll discuss this aspect in installment #18). There's usually a quite obvious 'best' speaker elevation for speakers on stands. Going by the manufacturer's recommended stand height is only a good starting point. That's because the manufacturer has no idea what your exact listening height (seat height plus your body height) will be. About the only speakers where this might not need to be considered would be any concentric array (separate tweeter located within the bass/mid's voice coil, ala KEF and some others). Frankly, I've found that it's rare that you'll be at the correct height for just about any speaker - on a stand or not - concentric drivers or not. The only other speaker design where it may not be as noticeable is when the tweeters are beside the mids (horizontal relationship vs. vertical). But that one is a whole 'nother topic... And side-by-side line arrays for tweeters and mids may need to be tilted to find their optimum angle, just as planars. Seat height may be critical here as well. Since we only have a narrow range of adjustment that we can make vertically, it's nice to at least know what is possible, if you so desire to address it. At one client's home, we actually built a custom 3 high platform under his sofa. We even matched the carpet exactly for the platform. The sound is much better, yet the appearance and utility of the sofa are largely unaffected. Please, do remember to try speaker tilt before trying seat height! I almost hesitate to say it, but it's not uncommon for both to make an improvement. Although I'm trying not to be too 'techie' (while still being 'tweaky'), I still should mention that the final reason why the effect may be noticeable enough for you to have a preference is that 'floor bounce' may be introducing a cancellation at some point. The slight movement simply shifts the frequency slightly so that you may prefer (or dislike) the sound at a different seating heights. Incidentally, I'm suggesting things that may be measured on a good analyzer, so it's not some mystical idea that maybe only three golden-eared audiophiles can hear! But hey, this hobby is all about having fun. So try it and see if it matters in your system."

If not, leave it to me and I'll report afterwards _______________________________________________________________________________ Dennis, I did try listening at different heights and as you recall, I sit much higher than usual with my ESLs. Feikeuung can confirm this, the further away, the higher you sit, up to a certain point. It will be interesting to note the effect in your listening environment. Please report. |

[#2053] Quad ESL speaker Brothers, I have the honour to invite the few hifi gurus in town to check my ESLs out today. They are doctorjohn, limage, kris, kensiu, feikeung, Jeff, Thomas et al. Whilst my ESLs in a less than satisfactory environment, cannot stand side by side with these guru's setups, I hope at least I help to clear Quad's name of not being able to play loud and without bass.

[#2054] Quad ESL speaker feikeung, limage, Among the many sopranos, Birgit Nilsson is the one you must listen to. There are many many interesting stories of Nilsson, the one I told this afternoon was that Franco Corelli quitted in the middle of a performance of Turandot in Metropolitan Opera House when Corelli could last as long and as high as Nilsson in a love duet. You can compare that in their recorded performance. ![]()

[#2055] Quad ESL speaker I mean Corelli couldn't last as long as Nilsson. Another one is that Karl Bolm lost a bet to Nilsson that Bolm claimed no one can sing the high F of Mozart's Magic Flute after a full Wagner performance. Nilsson demonstrated to him with ease in the dressing room after a 4 hour Wagner play. Another one that sings the high F with as much ease, if not much easier, is Edita Gruberova.

[#2056] Quad ESL speaker CP and Patrick, Eventually, I have my ESL spiked and also the entire ESL now screwed mounted onto the Rupert stand. Now the ESL and Rubert become one entity hopefully to achieve the best coupling result. Having done this, I believe the musical line of every intruments and vocal become more relaxed clearer. And the sound stage has improvement as well as being extended. Only one trade off, the bass was cleaner but in a reduced manner during the first few attempt. So I re-adjusted the tilting angle, side wall distance etc. again and the bass quantity is now back. For information, My ESL is only 12.5 inches from ground even adding the spikes. It was only 12 inches high without the spike. I shall try out more sitting height this week. I guess there may be a speaker/ear distance to listening height ratio for every appropriate tilting angle. I hope to find out more this week. Very amazing.

[#2060] Quad ESL speaker Although I was not in the best of shapes, yesterday afternoon's gathering at cpsjj's warehouse was 幸福的。 「幸福的感覺」源自: 1. Quad ESL 57 of course. This time sound was the best of my 3 visits. Both the sense of live and bass performance were enhanced. Vocals were mesmerizing. Although ultimately not that dynamic in such a big place, things were well enough to deliver an orchestral performance convincingly. To my ears, the differentiation of the woodwinds and most insruments surpass the Maggies. In a smaller place this would be a gem for personal listening. 2. Meeting the infammous Feikeung (I think he'd enjoy such a designation). Such a funny fellow. One only has to listen to him speak to have a big smile on the face. And pairing him up with Thomas was like a Shaolin movie. Too bad everybody had to go and I couldn't invite Feikeung to listen to my JBL's. 3. The company.

[#2061] Quad ESL speaker The Tristan with Bohm is one of my favorite opera recordings ___________________________________________________________________ The performance glows with intensity from beginning to end, carries through in the longest spans. Birgit Nilsson sings the Liebestod at the end of the long evening as though she was starting afresh, radiant and with not a hint of tiredness, rising to an orgasmic climax and bringing a heavenly pianissimo on the final rising octave to F sharp. Opposite Nilsson is Wolfgang Windgassen, the most mellifluous of Heldentenoren................the realism and sense of presence of the whole set have you bathing in the authentic atmosphere of Bayreuth. Making up an almost unmatchable cast are Christa Ludwig as Brangane, Eberhard Waechter as Kurwenal and Martti Talvela as King Mark, with the young Peter Schreier as the Young Sailor. --Penguin Guide (1994)--

[#2062] Quad ESL speaker Hello, doctor John, Can't find your e-mail address for contact. Any idea about your coming Saturday schedule? I would be meeting HC Lee in the morning to review some of our beloved vinyl records and he should be returning to his office after lunch break. If you were available in the afternoon without other engagement, I shall tidy up my flat and fill up the tea pot for you. If not, any other available time slot convenient to you is welcomed. Just advise me. Dennis
