[#2084] Quad ESL speaker Dear mda, Just learnt from doctor John that he will be engaged with other activity in tomorrow evening. I shall mail you again for another time slot. Just for sharing, You really need to find a good pair of stands for the ESL. The ESL are now entering into another league with more extended bass, greater stage depth and better clarity after I screwed mount the speakers to the Rupert stand and spiked, of course some re-positioning and tilting angle re-adjustment. Very very amazing. I think I must play all my favourite records again to appreciate the changes Regards Dennis

[#2085] Quad ESL speaker I was meant to wait for the GEC Z729 and Cossor black plate to give my final strike. Now I can't wait no longer and plug my quad matched VT75 to my QUAD II. Afterall, life is too short for waiting.

[#2086] Quad ESL speaker Dennis, The power supply and output transformers in your QUAD II could live too short if the VT75s unluckily went bad. VT75 hardly gets glowing plates! Thus no signal of anything went wrong could be detecked by naked eyes. No kidding.

[#2087] Quad ESL speaker Dear Richard, Thanks so much for your advice. I bought these NOS from Michael Emporium UK. The shop owner helped me to select and check all four tubes ensuring they are closely matched and in perfect condition out of his 40 pairs prior to shipment about 18 months ago. I then had all four tubes checked again 10 months ago. They were left untouched in my store room until last visit by Tim. They are working quite well this moment. Franly taking my QUAD II to a new performance height. Having said that, I really treasure every of your advice and would have them health check every six months. Thanks again. Please call me when you are free to my place for a cup of tea. Regards Dennis

[#2090] Quad ESL speaker Dennis, Morning! That was just a friendly reminder. There is an observation that older tubes usually sound better than later tubes, e.g. EL34 Xf0 (tall-feet-seven) sounds better than EL34 Xf1 (fat base). Xf1 sounds better than Xf2, etc. and so the audio lovers would jump on the band wagon without noting the potential risks of using such ancient tubes. The earlier version tubes were actually "prototypes" of the later versions of the same tube type. They were usually much over-engineered to the extent that they could kill an amp without forewarning. Fro example, its plates hardly glows red when it has increasing internal leakage (not uncommon for tired ancient tubes) and its plate current is several times higher than the amp should allow! No doubt VT75 sounds great but it is just over-engineered (so it sounds better!) and must be used with great care and Dennis is doing. :)

[#2093] Quad ESL speaker Dennis, Would like the opportunity to listen to your Quad with VT75. I still have the feeling that VT75 is more hifi while GEC KT66 is more musical on sustaining listening, just like other tubes replacing the Mullard GZ32.
