| [#2225] Quad ESL To ALL QUAD ESL user just have chance to buy pair of ESL speaker in Australia, becuase i bought a pair of Tannoy 10 Monitor Gold but due to the right drive 'Buzz'' problems return to seller and the seller offer me for AUD$1500 for exchange Quad ESL. becuase i have never try ESL, so i have few question want to ask. 1. ESL is it easy to drive 2. better match with valve or S.S 3. is ESL provide enough Bass PLX help otherwise i have to waiting the repair for the Tannoy 10 Monitor Gold .  |

| [#2228] Quad ESL hkkaho, Go for the ESL57 if they are in good condition, you won't regret. At Aud1500, it's a steal, in particular when all hifi equipment in Australia is so expensive. It is safer and afterall much better to drive the ESL with tube power amps. The impedance of the 57 ranges from 0.8 ohm to some 60 ohm. In fact they are best driven by tube amps with less than 30W output. I'm so far happy with the bass of the 57. It won't go very deep, don't expect it will go below 40Hz. But the bass is very tuneful and tight and maintains a good balance with the overall tonal characteristic. Also don't expect the bass is going to blow you off, the ESL wouldn't sound any louder than 110dB. There are no doubt limitations, but their merits are more than compensating. |

| [#2230] Quad ESL hkkaho, CP has said it all. You will find yourself entering into a different world of listening experience with the ESL. Simply no (or lesser if this term is argumentative) barrier between you and music. Having said that from our ESL users. You need to check: 1) whether sound level of both speaker is balanced or not, the level of one speaker or even both may become weak because the EHT is aged after 20 to 30 years of operation. For info, the sensitivity of ESL is 86db, so it sounds louder than LS3/5s. It's a simple job to change the diode. 2) Check if any burnt mark on the panel. 3) Get a good pair of stand for your ESL. | [#2231] Quad ESL DJ, In 90s, I witnessed plenty of Korean monks and Taiwanese Tai Chi learner came to HK spending hell lot of money buying and collecting the antique puer for drinking. I was told by the tea house master that drinking of antique tea can help them to escalate their level of zen and 氣 to a new height. I of course have reservation. Interestingly, I have some other strange observation that those old senior tea master (puer only) I'd made acquaintance since 90s most share similarity of have long life. Some are in now their late 80s or even 90s and still in good health condition. The key point of this observation is Long Life with GOOD HEALTH. Sorry I don't have the empirical findings to support my observation. Just curious whether any possible correlation to old puer tea drinking. |

If you like rock and love to hear the punchy bass with very loud sound volumn, then the ESL is definitely not yr cup of tea. But if you like smooth mid ranch, vocalist, chamber, jazz, then you will feel like you have found heaven on earth. Like I said, ESL is not for every one. It is in fact morning walk makes people live longer; see mostly elder people there on the hill! Second is eating in restaurant between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m., drinking whatever tea doesn't matter. Third is vintage audio; see the silvery hairs (if any remain) of the attendants in the Audiojumble in the UK! Perhaps vintage audio, tube audio in particular, is the single factor most relevant in R33. Its effect is cross-countries, cross-cultures, and cross-races. But, like you, I have NO proof of what I said. haha.. :) |

| [#2239] Quad ESL Dear Dennis and Richard, The ticket to long life, apart from Puer tea and morning walk, is to make yourself unhappy with the sound of your system, so it would provide you with the impetus to ever tweaking the system with urgent poignancy. In order to do that, it’s advisable to go for a set up slightly more complex than the ordinary. The ESL has the best mid-range which is a good place to start. A 5-way electronic crossover is what you need to mate the ESL with ribbon tweeters, followed by JBL mid bass, and then the Tannoy 15 lower bass, to be augmented of course by the Hartley 24’s subsonics. It’s not a bad idea to add a 1/3 octave professional equalizer as well just to complete the system. This is going to keep you busy for 365 days a year and would leave you no time to even think about the triviality of life and death. |

We watched pcs100 toiling over the membrane, stretching it with his self-made tool. Boy, what dedication! My hats off, SALUTE! Then we had a good lunch at the cafeteria. After such a dose of 幸福, I dragged jules to my place for a shot of 放蕩不羈 (JBL)! Maybe the reverse order would be closer to common sense? |

The kind words from friends are more likely impressions of a different kind of presentation that they had come across. Every system has its own merits and limitations; the limitations of ESL are actually quite obvious. At the same time, these limitations might have been over-exaggerated in general.
