| [#2483] Bull ring Dennis, You are right. The built-in step up of the EAR 834 is probably an afterthought add-on and it certainly is nothing to be reckoned with. For years I have been using the Koetsu which is extremely neutral and very quiet. The kind of install and forget thing. |

My eldest, James will be playing both in the group performances as well as in the finale of the concert of Hungarian Rhapsody, accompanied by the St Stephen Girls' Orchestra. | [#2491] Advertisement KY, My son has his own system which consists of a Sony CD Walkman and a Bose Wave radio. He occasionally listens to my other systems of ARC Ref.1, Mark 335 and Eggleston Rosa and the other of TFK S-81 and TFK L65 horn speakers. He never commented on the sonic properties but only on how the music was played. He seems to be able to listen into the music even with the most humble system. For one time I introduced him to a Brahms violin concerto by Ginette Neveu played on my system. He first found it awful with the recording but no sooner than the first movement he came to appreciate the excellent performance and then grabbed my CD to play in his system ever since. To be quite honest I can't bear the sound of this CD out of his system but he seems to enjoy very much. His comment was the new generation of musicians express their passion by rubato, the older generation by subtle tonal differences which requires much better skills and understanding. Frankly I can't tell there is any tonal differences with his system but he can easily appreciate even with my car stereo with all the road noises. I have had some extensive discussions on this topic with drwkng earlier which feikeung and limage summed up to be the degree of high fidelity we require to get close to the music. I still puzzle that there could be some different attributes of the sound of the music that musicians listen to get into the music which we are not aware. |

| [#2493] Advertisement CP, interesting post and thanks for sharing. I did have some discussions with my senior manager about the hifi. He will always ask me about the audio stuff when we meet as he learnt that I'm always "busy" in audio. He shared with me that he has got a close friend always hanging around in hifi shops, almost whenever he visited cd/hifi shops in Singapore, he would find his friend there. No joke! He met his friend recently and asked him about the hifi. His friend said: "oh, no more in up to date info about hifi, no time finding the details, comparing every single different amongst the gears. i am now just relax and enjoy music with my simple system". I would tend to believe I am going thru the same path eventually. The real music appreciation is the most important factor.... |

He can hear loud and clear the high freq of an induction cooker which he says make him headache. I hear nothing. We therefore cannot use induction cooker for 打邊爐 at home. |

| [#2497] Stacked Quad ESL57 I am glad to share my experience of stacked Quad ESL57. Driven by Quad II, mount on wooden frame made when I was in HK. The picture is much bigger, Seems to have a larger 'sweet spot' (position made less difference). Bass is stronger (but may be a bit more than you want) But I can hear more details, which I could not find for a single pair. And it is much louder in volume (had to turn down the volume a bit) That means the speakers are more efficient, playing music with ease. Still running in the second pair (lower stacked pair), I assume the sound would be brighter and less tight after running a few weeks. Any Stacked ESL57 user here??? Please share! Powercord |

She did donate all that small money she had earned throughout her life to build a school in China. She leads a simple retirement life and she is contented. But I think her money can be better utilized. China is now the country with the biggest foreign reserve on earth and education, being the primary responsibility of any country, should not be a concern any more for anyone who has the heart to help our fellow countrymen. | [#2499] Single Quad ESL57 speaker With the help of Patrick, the good one in a pair of Quad ESL57 was found. It's the seventh day I am listening music through one ESL57 speaker. Vocals and instruments through it is much better and life like than dynamic speakers. One more thing i like to say, all in this thread are wonderful people, they help and share with each other. The hopeless parents are going to perish one day and our hope can only reside in the younger. I have also helped to set up a school in a poorest county in Guangdong 10 years ago. At that time we successfully bargained with the state government to match our contribution. With the success of the primary school, last year we were more successful to get the government to triple match our contribution to set up a secondary school. So bit by bit we are getting more fund channelled to the education arena and also to the area where these are most needed. There is of course, so said, a government mechanism to provide education in the rural areas but it will take ages, if not totally taken up by the corrupted bureaucracy. We will have to be quick to brainwash the younger to "outcast" the culture of the current administration. I still visit the school at least once a year to award scholarships and lecture the students and the parents. When I studied in UK, there were huge amount of foreign students from the under-developed countries at subsidized rate. When they went back and became leaders of their industries and countries, they would only purchase ICL, not IBM. Like our ESL余 慕 蓮 , he's been brainwashed in England and has become a die-hard Quad and Linn admirer. This is how this thread is born. |
