[#2563] ESL57 OTA panel
Dennis,

I didn't get the OTA panels. Jcml got them, I think, from powercord.

For the speaker height, I actually came down from 18", i.e. 1" higher than Patrick's original height to ensure that I cover the full spectrum, to the stock feet height and then went up again to arrive at 14". I believe I have done enough experiments to disprove YK Chan's claim.

[#2564] ESL57 OTA panel
CP,
The panels I bought from Powercord are not OTA panels, they are original used Quad treble panels. Powercord will post them out tomorrow.

See:
'Dear jcml
I have got a pair. it is used and in original quad specification carefully selected and matched by one thing audio. the dust cover is also replaced by one thing audio.
Interested? please offer

[#2565] Telefunken Notebook
Audiofan,

This is the small 1W Telefunken "notebook" you mentioned. Not much greater than my vintage Sony Vaio.

It needs a minor modification to change the high frq. filter to work properly.

Dear Dennis,
I am still struggling with the colour matching for my stacked pair. As you know, all grills are slightly different in colour, esp for bronze ones.
I have got 3 pairs of speakers and 4 pairs of grills, 2 pairs of bronze and 2 pairs of black. But they do not exactly matched. And I do not have time to re spray them.
Another issue is they are quite heavy and postal cost is expensive.
Regards
Powercord

Hi Patrick, still waiting for your info on the cd player (portable) you mentioned earlier.
Thanks

For OTA OTEC treble panels, my understanding is that they are more efficient than the original quad panels. So if you replace the original quad treble (but keep the same bass panel), the speakers may be too bright, with too much high and mid range.

But since stacking up a pair yield slightly too much bass, I may buy 4 treble panels for replacement when upgrading (to balance). It all depends on how they sounds like after fully run-in

Dennis, if you have too much bass (as described by Patrick), adding a resistor to the circuit for the bass panels is an option. You are a lucky man as the OTA OTEC, although not in the original Quad spec, sounds better in terms of clarity and density than the original panels and that's why they are so expensive.

Any one tried using better power source to feed the speakers??? please share, as I know reducing RF can have a huge effect on the quality.

Oh yes, dennis, has we have discussed, you can know how a stacked pair sounds like by disconnecting the speaker cable from one side and place them over the terminals to the speakers (act like a jumper) and see what difference you notice.

I have been driving stacked pair with Quad II for 4 days after confirming with OTA that it is safe to do so. I have got a bit of reservation with Quad II for being slightly less exciting (or too flat). I am planning to modify one pair of Quad II by GT audio to see what I can get.

Dear Ricci,

Please take your time and do let me know if you would have a spare pair of grille on offer after sorting out the colour matching issue.

More importantly, remember to call us for a gathering when you are home.

After running the OTA ESL for few months, I realized the OTA can sound more dynamic than the original ESL while retaining the most goodies of the ESL. However, I still miss the original ESL much which I think slighting edge over the OTA in terms of sweetness and more feminine in human touch.

I am now seriously thinking to ship back my NOS pair for own use instead of collection.

Your double stacked ESL project must be in good progress. However, I can almost tell that you would probably feel alone even if you now own the best sound on this planet. Image 一棒入洞but nobody knows, Kris from our friendly neighbour thread will tell you how painful it would be. So any chance bringing back your ESL to HK for good in near future?

From Gang of Five: Quad Treble Panel Comparison
By Gary Jacobson
http://www.geocities.com/drquad@pacbell.net/panelsurvey.html

OTEC, One Thing Audio, Coventry, England

The manufacturer did warn us that this panel was distinctly different to an original Quad panel and is designed to work with the OTEC bass panel. We tend to concur with this from an electrical point of view, given the following observations. The capacitance of the panel is slightly different to an original panel, and may need to be run with minor crossover network modifications in the original Quad. The frequency response from 500Hz to 5kHz is essentially a 1:1 mapping of the original Quad panel with a slight “dip” at 7.5 kHz. However, above 8kHz things do alter. The OTEC panel has a distinct peak in the 11kHz to 12kHz area exhibiting ~2 dB more output than an original Quad treble panel. Above 12 kHz and up to 20 kHz the panel starts to rapidly drop in output and at 20kHz has dropped ~14dB with respect to an original Quad panel. This suggests a panel that will lack ‘sparkle’ in comparison to an original (say) and add an odd emphasis to the high range of some acoustic instruments. Again, electrical measurements aren’t everything................

To use Ron Best’s words: “It’ll sound a bit like a fish out of water with an original bass panel.” This was said in reference to the panel we had for listening in these tests although Ron did not originally supply it for the purpose. I was curious to hear one, and One Thing Audio kindly offered. This is a new panel with thin stators (yes, more on that little factor later). Listener’s comments on the panel in comparison to the originals in the stacked array were very similar to those quoted above for the German panel, so it is probably not worth repeating them. The panel gave a “soft” overall performance, although the mid-range is lacking nothing in actual detail when you sit and listen closely. The parts of the music are all there. There is no loss of absolute pitch or rhythm, but there is a loss of excitement in the music. There is a loss of some of that immediacy that an original Quad panel has in abundance without being “in your face” about it. It is likely that this panel has to be used with some kind of crossover modification and with its corresponding One Thing Audio bass panel partner to give the impressive performances described elsewhere in the audio press. This is fair enough comment in itself but I feel it will not satisfy the original Quad owner who requires the original Quad ESL sound. Listening to a single pair of Quads with this panel installed in one of the pair simply further emphasised the differences between this and the original panels. A definite imbalance and lack of ‘excitement’ and even a partial loss of the fabulous openness of the original speaker was noticed. Once again, I could only ascribe this series of impressions to tonal differences because the panel gave no obvious mechanical clues to any lack of transient response.

Dear Ricci,

The QUAD II sounds right when played with its own QUAD 22 pre-amp plugged with the right X7 tubes.

I'd tried Telefunken smooth and rib plate, Mullard long plate X7 etc, all failed to produce the air and ambience until I plugged the old Mullard CV4004 (M8137). PS: only the old CV4004 works.

I'll show you the effect of different X7 tubes when we next met.

Hi Dennis
I think I still have so many things to do, including being more serious with vinyls e.g. to buy a LP12 once things are settled. At the moment, I am still listening to CDs.
And I really think with the speaker now, the upgrade of the source make a larger difference.
Cheers

CP, Patrick,

Any possibility to gather all five makes of different ESL panels for a big festival?

We now have the original and OTA under our collection. What happen if we bought the other 4 panels? We can....

I can feel my better half beating my head in my wet dream tonight.

Let us think think.

Oh dear Ricci, I must have confused you not mentioning a pair of CV4004 for the QUAD 22. The sound of old Mullard shield CV4004 comes from heaven.

Just replaced the the pair of stock Mullard ECC83c with CV4004 will be fine. I am using VT75 and black base KT66 in QUAD II. The Cossor 52KU rectifier make a hell lot of difference.

The Linn people is planning to launch an upgrade kit called keel for the new generation LP12 later this year. Please wait.

But most people are buying the wrong types, in which a waste of their money.

Don't buy until I showed you how they look like.

Close up of cd player. please note the model no. is CD3400. That's the only model that sounded good. All the other model were not good.

Sorry for the late respond. I was out of town and didn't have a chance to look at the Web.

cpsjj, haven't surfed on AV forum some days. We can have lunch/dinner and to chat on hifi any time. I think your idea of making long legs like yours is viable. Not sure if other members are interested to place group order of the same legs from your furniture "sifu" in PRC. If they do, we have to seek your kind assistance to realize.
