[#241] QUAD ESL about the Arcici stands. Are they fixed or can be tilted for esl57? thks. -------------------------------------------------- rsbn589......You can adjust the height to a max of 18" from the floor as well as the vertical dispersion by tilting the panel. I filled my stand with No. 18 lead shots for better sound. Patrick

[#242] QUAD ESL Except the early model (serial number before 16000 QUAD), QUAD uses bee wax to insulate the EHT boards.

[#243] QUAD ESL I'd used to try this double 15 ohm system several times when other family member was out. I guess I did not like it much but memory was gone now -------------------------------------------- Dennis Honest to say, the double LS3/5A did not attract me much. I don't think/ believe I can have double happiness, using double LS3/5A : )

[#244] QUAD ESL Sweet Spot Abstract from internet on "sweet spot of ESL speaker. The link is: http://www.quadesl.org/Quad_Basics/quad_basics.html The speakers should have the treble panel centres "aimed" directly at each of the listener's ears. This is in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions. This is not a particularly "social" speaker in terms of the so-called "sweet spot". When you have the "aiming" correct in both planes, you will know you have it right. The sound stage depth will be huge and the placement of perfomers within the sound stage will be pin-point accurate.

[#245] QUAD ESL Hi rsbn, >>Hi Grant, ,may I know what the insulating varnish used? >>Just cover the track at the back of PCB will do >>(right one, picture below)? I plan to replace the >>old EHT blocks with the new ones this week. I used Electrolune Insulating Varnish. I ordered it from Farnell.com (Order Code: 958372). Yes just brush it on the entire back of the pcb where the tracks are. Are you building a new pcb for the EHT? What diodesd are you using? From experience the 1N4007 is not sufficient. True they were used in the originals but that's because they were all that's available before. Best to use higher ratings also on the caps. Good luck! Grant

[#246] QUAD ESL Grant, thks for the info. I will replace the old EHT blocks with the ones supplied by the previous owner (picture shown in page 6). I'm not sure if the diodes are 1N4007. Thks. KY.

[#247] QUAD ESL Hi KY, the pic looks blurred but look like 1N4007's. Maybe you can verify the marking on the diodes. They will work but you will get longer life from higher rated ones. I noticed your recent post at the quadhifi group. I am having similar stands made at the moment.:) Good luck.

[#248] QUAD ESL Hi Grant, The MAF stands that Dave is using look very matching with the esl57, though Arcici could be a better choice in terms of sounding. I also like the original legs (look classic) but I have to resolve the heavy booming bass issue. Do send us the picture of the MAF standards once available. About the EHT blocks, I will check the making of the diodes. Guess I will not change to components on the PCB board. Will report once blocks replacement done.

[#249] QUAD ESL Yup will post some pics when completed. I've designed them to be tilted 9degrees. This makes the ESL's almost tilted to my listening position. The stands can be tilted +/- 4degrees more via the spikes for fine tuning. Good luck on your EHT rectifier board. Verify the voltages after rehooking them to the transformer and before connecting to the panels.

[#250] QUAD ESL I visited Patrick's flat this afternoon. His system is comprised of a Shangling valve CD player, Oracle Delphi/SME3009/Summiko Blue Point Special, Audio Illusion model 3 ECC88 valve preamp and a pair of Quicksilver KT88 push pull valve monoblocks. Patrick's listening room is one of the smallest I have ever been, even smaller than my own room in England. Although the separation of the ESL57 is only a few feet, the imaging at the sweet spot is superb. I felt as if the singer was about 2 feet in front of me. Because the limited space in Patrick's room, spatial separation is not at its best, but the tonal resolution is excellent. I like the Shangling valve CD player a lot, it has finnesse and is very smooth in the midrange. We briefly tried an Enlightened Audio Design DAC, although the details were improved, the warmth and smoothness were lost. I asked Patrick to switch back to the valve output stage of the Shangling after a few minutes. The Quicksilver KT88 power amps are superb. They have plenty of power and the midrange and treble are very refined. I would be very interested to listen to Patrick's ESL57 using a pair of Leak TL12.1 It has been a great experience to listen to Patrick's system. Before my visit, I couldn't believe a pair of ESL57 would work in a small room in HK, but Patrick has completely convinced me how good the ESL57 can be in a confined space. This makes me reconsider finding a pair back in England. Thanks,Patrick. Regards Hon

[#251] QUAD ESL For your easy reference: Pcs100 = Patrick. Patrick's pair of ESL is in best cosmetic condition I've ever seen or known. Look like a new pair to me. Do you know a new pair ESL using modern materials from Germany will cost you euro 4K + extra shipping cost? Now I am mouth watering..... ......
