[#2606] ESL57 I was playing the Argo Box set on Corelli’s 12 Concerti Grossi last evening, 3 LPs all the way without recess, and could not help to be amazed by St. Martin’s remarkable prowess in expressing the baroque style to its fullest extent. It takes us back to the core appeal of music in its pure unadulterated form — nothing profound, nothing gravely serious, just simple, relaxed, melodic and majestically gorgeous. During the 2 hr sonic bliss, I could not stop wondering how this sound coming out of the unassuming Maggies could in any way be substantially bettered by the Quad ESL, the acclaimed King of chamber music. Dear CP and Dennis, next time when I come to your place, do not be surprised to find me bringing this box set, along with a pair of fastidious ears. There is a CD version on exactly the same Op 6 of Corelli’s, but in every respect, the CD comes nowhere near the performance of the original LPs. The soloist, Alan Loveday plays articulately with his beautiful Guarnerius which seems to rival the best of the Strads in terms of sweet overtones. By the way, does anyone know of anyone else who plays on the Guarnerius, apart from Henrynk Szeryng, Aaron Rosand, Ricci and Herman Krebbers? If there are just 9 Guarnerius left on this earth, where the hell have the other 4 gone? ![]()

[#2607] ESL57 Dear Limage, You know it I am an absolute classical blind. After learning such a great piece of Marriner music from your posting, I simply couldn't resist myself ordering a copy overseas from eBay today for my appreciation with my ESL. You see, that's what I meant a fast learner myself, but not necessary a good learner. I guess it would be more appropriate serving Earl Grey rather than Chinese tea to complement the Marriner music when you next come visiting my cheapy little ESL. Hope you like it.

[#2608] ESL57 next time when I come to your place, do not be surprised to find me bringing this box set, along with a pair of fastidious ears ____________________________________________________________________________________ limage, Incidentally I was enjoying Tartini yesterday, the immediate successor to Corelli as a virtuoso violinist. Tartini was heavily influenced by the concerto model promulgated by Corelli but towards the later part of his career, he had begun to take a greater interest in the expressive possibilities of music, preferring often ornate ornamentation to balanced riguor. Whilst Tartini was at pains to stress the soloist's virtuosity in expressive dialogue with the orchestra, it seems first and foremost to have been tonal colour rather than polyphonic discourse that held the whole of his attention as a composer. It would then be extremely interesting to compare these subtle differences with the ESL when you bring your fastidious ears and Corelli along. ![]()

[#2609] ESL57 apart from Henrynk Szeryng, Aaron Rosand, Ricci and Herman Krebbers? If there are just 9 Guarnerius left on this earth, where the hell have the other 4 gone? __________________________________________________________________________________________ limage, Interesting question. I'm not sure whether there are only 9 Guarneri in this world. My count is this: Syeryng, Grumiaux, Stern, Menuhin, Heifetz, Kogan, Cerovsek, Rosand, Ricci and Midori. I am not aware Herman Krebbers got one, you told me. Ricci used to have 2, and sold the ex-Huberman to a Japanese music foundation which is now on loan to Midori for life time use.

[#2610] ESL57 Morning CP, A certain Mr. Sin from HK whom I met many years ago told me so. He is the guy who has kept the Stradivarius of Heifetz ever since the death of the great man. When Szeryng died more than ten years ago, Mr. Sin dashed off to Mexico in pursuit of the Guarnerius Del Gesu but in vain, much to the relief of music lovers. Grumiaux, Stern and Menuhin are not using Guarnerius. Menuhin’s Strad came from the same block as Heifetz’s and that was confirmed by Mr. Sin as he saw the two matched exactly in streak. Grumiaux’s fiddle is probably a Strad, and Stern’s, not even a Strad, I guess. But then, it should not be a surprise for these great men having more than one violin in their possession.

[#2611] ESL57 Mornign limage, You're right that Grumiaux owned a Strad which is known as the "Titan", but it is quite well known that he invariably recorded and gave concerts using his 1744 Guarneri del Gesu known as the "ex-Hummel". Heifetz played a 1741 Guarnerius and a 1731 Stradivarius, whether the Strad had passed to the hands of Menuhin I have to find out. The Guarnerius he played had once belonged to Ferdinand David who had helped Mendelssohn with the violin concerto and who then played its premiere on that very instrument.

[#2612] ESL57 Stern’s, not even a Strad, I guess ________________________________________ And it is documented here clearly in Stern's official website that he plays a Guarneri de Gesu. http://www.isaacstern.com/

[#2613] ESL57 Menuhin’s Strad came from the same block as Heifetz’s and that was confirmed by Mr. Sin as he saw the two matched exactly in streak __________________________________________________________________________ And here's from Wikipedia : The famed violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini’s favorite instrument Cannone Guarnerius was a Guarneri del Gesù violin of 1743, and the "Lord Wilton" Guarneri del Gesù violin made in 1742 was owned by Yehudi Menuhin.

[#2614] ESL57 I guess the violin collector, Mr Sin, mentioning by Limage is 冼琴王, who used to be appeared or mentioned in 80s 90s 發燒音響.

[#2620] ESL57 Can I join just for a week? ________________________________ What a nice surprise and an unexpected but most welcome provisional member. I was about to ask JC to borrow the dainty Ongaku for the ESL after comparing it to the heldentenor type V69. NOw I just have to pop up at JC's mansion for the experience. JC.............can you hang on to the german ESL for a little while as I will be out of town for 2 weeks but am dying to give it an audition. 490mm seems slightly too high and I hope it will not mislead you to believe that the bass roll off too early. I will suggest you to try to tilt them backward for about 15deg and check for any difference.

[#2621] ESL57 ~ Thursday party Dennis, Gingers et al, Many thanks for remembering me for your party. I look forward to seeping the pu-erh tea again. Unfortunately I will be out of town with my family for 2 weeks and hope I can make up after the chinese new year. My son gave an excellent performance last night before his departure to UK. I was told it was very well received by some of the big names in the local music arena present last night. It's good to see not that he excelled in his skills but he had excellent communications with the conductor and the orchestra during the performance and his thorough enjoyment was able to lead the orchestra to bounce with the melodic rhythm. Thanks for Patrick and other friends to support. I hope they are not disappointed in any way. I can only take pictures during the rehearsal, and without flash! ![]()
