| [#2643] ESL57 ~ Thursday party Dennis, EL84 might be the sweetest sounding tube, everything is like coated with syrup, difference is how thick the coating is; just like tasting chocolate coated strawberry. They are best suited for female vocal so if you play 白雪仙 or 山穛Q子, it would be ideal. However, for male vocals I would find them sometimes sound too mellow or feminine in particular on ESL, so don't even think of playing Louis Armstrong or Danny Summer. Leak St20 is very typical in this characteristic. The V410 is not too different, but these germany amps display huge soundstage and have very tight and tuneful bass compared with the others. If Richard or Gingers will be bringing the 27M, I would believe they will make a perfect match. Have a good time with Gingers, Richard and Hon. | [#2652] ESL57 Updates on jcml's esl 57- The wooden frame and panels were in excellent condition. However, the parts in the audio transformer units were in very bad condition. value of resistors were way out. Modification of audio transformer unit to prevent damage to treble panel were not done (for serial no. prior to 16800). Metal case badly rusted. and one of the Bulgin power connector in EHT unit was broken. I dismentled all EHT and audio transformer units, replaced all parts with new ones, replaced all wirings and new Bulgin power connectors, send off the rust on the metal casing and re-spray with gray paint. I have also double checked the power output of the EHT unit and the connection and value of all the parts in audio tranformer unit and everything are in good track. following picture shows EHT unit before re-built. note the broken Bulgin power connector in one of the EHT unit.  |

Dennis also bought a few LPs to my workshop to try on my DUAL TT + EICO ST-84 phono, LEAK TL/12.1 power, ROGERS 99/100 and Tannoy 15" GOLD. Indeed LP is the way to go as far as sound source is concerned. I also met long time-no see friends: Hon, Patrick and JcmL. What a wonderful day we had! |

| [#2661] ESL57 ~ Thursday party It was a pleasure to visit Dennis' place to listen to his Quad ESL57 with Quad II/22 and Linn Sondek/Lingo/Linto turntable set up. Dennis' vinyl based system is certainly very analogue which has plenty of air and details, although I felt that the treble extension isn't high enough using the Quad valve amps. After swapping to the 27M pre and Leak ST20 power amps, the sound opened up quite a bit but overall it is less full than the Quad amps. I suggested to Dennis that a EL34 party should be organised including the following power amps using the 27M pre: 1. Tim's Audiomaster 11A with the famour Partridge transformers 2. Beam Echo DL7-35 - I listened to them in a Leak fest in England, I was very impressed with these beasts 3. Ginger's Radford STA25 4. I think Tim also has a pair of Sound Sales EL34 amps as well which may be interesting. 5. Ginger's Leak Stereo 50, Stereo 60 and TL25+ Probably, I won't be in HK when this party is organised, but I think the EL34 push pull amps will suit the ESL since I generally find that EL34 is a good all rounder and the bass is plentiful for the ESL57.
