Nice talking to you again. We've been thinking of you and wondered how you are doing with the ESL, considering that you have the big Westminster. I'm glad you are enjoying them and are trying every means to perfect their performance with different amps, which I'm sure you have plenty. Patrick is also using a 300B driving his ESL but considering that you got much more space and your repertoire is mostly classical music and opera, I'm afraid the small wattage will easily show its deficiency. It will be a sin not to bring your V69 alive.......and with EL156?

You seem not sharing a lot with the mates here which is odd with the culture. You know, this thread has now become a 人民公社, everybody sharing everything together with feikeung even proposing a wife swapping club!

Thanks for the update.

The US electrostatics panels I saw was indeed a pair of 5 feet tall electrostatic speakers from US maker. Not quite remember its name, it could be something like audiostat.

The shop is called Wing Kai Video & Audio Company, same shop we bought our ESL57 and ESl63 pro two days ago.

Just checked the name of the speaker, it is called acoustat. Not sure whether it's working good or bad. It's about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. Is it worth collecting these big US hamburger? Any more about this speaker you can tell me?

Let's share more on ALS

The price of most ALS items are competitive after bargaining. However, the major concern is that most are dead on delivery (DOD) and one needs to check the condition inside out carefully before commitment.

About the 2 ESL we bought. We knew both ESL are suffering some problem per shopkeeper but cosmetically they look excellent or even almost mint. After removing all dress followed by physical hand and sight inspection by Patrick upside down as well as inside out (Feikeung, no imagination of nude pretty girls here please), all stators were checked OK and no major concern found. We considered the offer were bargian of the century. So we took them home. Everyone was smiling. End of a happy story.

Dear cpsjj, I'm hesitant in the face of so many experienced ESL masters. I possess some of the recommended amps by One Thing Audio for ESL57, such as Electrocompanient 2 Channel, Futterman H3aa, OTL3, and Radford STA-15 and have been testing them with ESL57 in the past weeks. Even though these amps are competent to handle difficult loads, they are not quite up to my required sound quality. The Radford STA-15 in its original state might be too old in its caps/resistors thereby causing split ends when playing piano and harp. It was then sold to a vintage collector. The best sounding amps are Ocellia 300B SE (7W) and PP (15W) from France. As the price of vintage WE300B is exorbitant, new production 98 or 99 tubes are used and they sound quite good indeed. I also have Telefunken V69 and McIntosh 20W-2. One of the EL156 of V69 grows red at times and McIntosh 20W-2 needs to be checked to play safe. They were sent to a technician almost a year ago and nothing has been done yet. I am seeking the assistance of cpsjj to restore/check them so that they could be hooked to ESL in due course. Thank you cpsjj.

Acoustat went under many years ago. They sounded like the Maggies in certain ways. The new Acoustat is in Chinese hands and there is a Guangzhou showroom which I visited on a few occasions. The new Acoustat goes after the home theatre market. The sound is horrible and the sales people there don't know their ass from the hole in the ground.
I would not touch the Acoustat, new or old, with a ten foot pole.

This sound like a horror story. EL156 cannot be used in the Telefunken V69. You may damage the amp by doing so.

The V69 can only use F2a11. EL156 is used in the higher power V101 instead.

I am also seeking for help for the restoration of my V101.

EL156 is based on a Y10 socket and F2a11 is on a Y8 socket. You can check that by :

F2a11 has 8 pins and there is 10 pins on the EL156.

It is not just a change in bias but the socket has to be changed and modified too. But I guess your seller has done all the modifications before selling it to you.

I would recommend you to get someone familar with the V69 to convert it back to original.

I am feeling very excited about my next trip to HK since there will hopefully be audition of Maggies from Limage, ESL57 and 63 from Patrick, jcml and Dennis, and other ESL users in HK. The rate that people are snapping up new tops, I won't need to buy many myself to have a taste of good gears!
