[#3166] Quad ESL63 & 57
Dear Powercord and CP,

Yes I considered my last pair in almost mint cosmetic condition was really a bargain of the century. Even without side by side on-spot inspection by Patrick, I would not hesitate to take the front and back grilles home for the asking $4.3K. If the shop keeper dared connecting the speakers to amp, I would have paid $15K.

Having said that, I would also consider Patrick's newly owned ESL63 is even a better bargain. I recall he was so high flying but overexcited and took his ESL63 to the wrong block of building when returning home.

What more can I say, Patrick is giving all his best and support to my new pair and I really look forward to the coming moment when Patrick plugged all the parts to my new pair to playing the Rossini Sonata by Accardo from my Linn analogue source with my old QUAD II/22 just being fully serviced by the vintage master Sir Wai Lee Tsang

It looks my QUAD II resumed after full service by Tsang sir and all Hunts cap checked OK. All treble and airness is coming back and my LP miss Cheung Tak Lan sounds 10 years young than she used to be in my system.

Since two failed resistors and two broken cap have been replaced with NOS, I need to run in the old amp for another 20 hours to have them sound best. I schedule to wait until next week to open the new ESL's voice with my run-in QUAD II.

Gentlemen, do you want to hear how the original ESL57 compare to One Thing Audio ESL57 rebuilt outside Patrick's flat? Give me a week or two.

I am a happy man again.

Dennis,

Please take a look at the 3 LPs and tell me if there is one you like to exchange for your 奶媽碟. I have no idea how much they are worth, may be more or may be much less than yours. They are all good recordings though.

Dennis,

If I were you, I will certainly take the Ferras/Karajan/Tchaikovsky VC; it stays all time on the Penguin record guide. It is a much more well known recording than Ferras earlier version with Silvestri though the earlier one is musically more pleasing. Ferras sinewy nervous vibrato is always a worry but the effect just shines on hifi.

Dear Powercord,

I think there are great sifu in this thread such as DD and rcwy. However, I understand they are pretty busy and loaded with restoration projects.

May I suggest you visit master 偉利曾, the same master who serviced my QUAD II. His shop is located at Room 6 3/F Tak Fat Building, 59-61 Tung Choi St. Kowloom. His number is 9631 8298.

I'll take you there when you are back.

just a note for those who want to get the Quad II serviced. if possible get your sifu to change the cathode resistor to one with high wattage. the original part is under spec. get something at least around 6W+ to give 2 times safety factor.

Rossini is possibly better known now for his sonatas and overtures among audiophile circles, rather than the operas which brought him fame as well as wealth during his lifetime. Rossini never took it too seriously when he wrote overtures while the audience at the time hardly took the thing seriously either.

This Decca recording by LSO/Gamba is my old time favorite, a source of delight and a tough test for the dynamic capability of the audio system.

This version by ASMF is even better in terms of atmosphere. You would invariably be fooled to believe it is a performance by a full orchestra rather than the diminutive chamber combo and you just cannot resist swinging and swaying to the rhyme and rhythm of these short pieces of hilarious music.

I know CP is going to show us his one hundred and one different pieces but I’m sure none of them can rival this benchmark ASMF !

[#3177] Gamba
To me the Gamba version is still the best. But the re-issue LP (like the other re-issue Decca's) I don't like. Original LP, even later cheaper versions are much better. The CD is also fine (my earlier UK version better than the later LEGEND).

No, I don't have hundred and one, only 99 for the overtures. As expected, I always have something to disagree. Despite your favourite Marriner's reading of Rossini's overtures is one of the better, equivalent to Chailly in my rating, my favourite always goes to Fricsay with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra. Although it is in mono, the taut and dramatic performance just blew every other versions away. A more modern one which I like is the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. However, both of these do not have the most popular William Tell Overture which remains unchallengeable in Reiner's reign.

I have the full set too, LP plus CD. But sonically the one I posted is way ahead of the rest.

Let's talk about which is our favorite overture!

Mine is "La Gazza Ladra", by far.

Quite a few, in fact, all from overture collections since I seldom listen to operas in their entity.

Rossini’s aside,
Berlioz: Les Francs—Juges
Suppé: Pique Dame; Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna
