Her much anticipated Hong Kong dbut include Richard Strauss's serene Four last songs - music of which Fleming is the supreme modern interpreter. Conductor Laureate David Atherton leads this all-Strauss programme which starts in the sombre reflections of Metamorphosen, written in despair following the bombing of Munich in 1944, and ends with the carefree, pre-war wit and playfulness of Der Rosenkavalier. |

[#3187] ESL57 Upgrade Dear all, I have just swapped my OTA rebuilt ESL57 with the original ESL57 having full service by Patrick. Result is absolutely gorgeous and encouraging even driven by the cheap QUAD II ampusing ordinary GEC KT66 tubes. We'd also tried the original stock feet and the OTA Rupert stand with the help from Patrick, Edmund and CP today. Well, we dare to say again that a proper 12" to 14" stand is a must to every pair of ESl57.

[#3193] QUAD ESL speaker dkyyu, Congratulations on your new ESL. I must say this is the best ESL so far I have heard at your place. They prompted me to think again whether I should try other treble panels other than the OTA. I shall bring along the 72/73 to meet this beautiful speaker next time.

[#3194] QUAD ESL speaker CP, You are welcomed. Anytime please. I believe the OTA bass panels are made to match with their own OTEC treble. SO you may need to consider changing all panels as a whole when making a move. Ricci, please advise us again.

[#3195] QUAD ESL speaker Hi Dennis i'm glad to hear that your ESL57 has been improved. Can you describe the difference between the One Thing Audio and Patrick's restored treble panel performance? I am intrigued about the difference. Hon

[#3196] QUAD ESL speaker Dear Hon, I recalled every of you complaining my QUAD II amp lacking the treble during your last visit inCNY. You were absolutely correct. After full restoration by master Wai Lei Tsang, the QUAD sounds much much better but still lacks the glorious and natural QUAD mid range. In other words, the OTA and QUAD II can sound pretty well but not exciting enough to stay in the English Premier League. Without proper placement nor any fine tuning done, we plugged in the original ESL57 to replace the OTA on Rupert stand today using the ordinary tubes in my newly serviced QUAD II/22. My goodness, all magic of QUAD mid range and micro details are back. I really meant it was magic. To sum up in one word, REAL, the vocal and string is as real as one could imagine. There is trade off as the bass roll off point is higher than the OTA, but frankly nobody there cared. I guess CP is now re-considering his OTA treble panel replacement seriously. Hope he sleeps well tonight. What I am going to do next? Fine tune the new ESL57's positioning for a bit more bass and looks for a smart looking dedicated stand. We also need to remount the dust cover again using Patrick's own built mounting device as they are mounted quite slack today. The new pair really looks fabulously new, very similar to Patrick's pair and they sound very alike. Last step, ship the second pair 43???? home and I guess you guys don't have to wait till Christmas to find out how poorly or excellently the stacked ESL57 sounds. Then, what next????????

[#3197] QUAD ESL speaker Ah, Perhaps new amp after stacked ESL, How about OTL plus passive pre-amp?

[#3198] QUAD ESL speaker Hi Dennis OTEC is very different from original Quad, of course. However, the oridinarily serviced ESL57 by OTA is similar to the original Quad Spec, with a bit better bass ( i have a pair of Quad UK serviced compared with OTA serviced one). I suspect your OTEC is not in the best condition (not fully burned in?) But many people like the mid range of original ESL 57. I wonder whether you can attentuate the bass of the OTEC pair and hear what the difference is. May be connect it with speaker cable with less bass (like Mogami 2803 x 2) Replacing the original Quad treble panel with OTEC one will lead to treble being too loud as OTEC panels are more efficient. OTA said you can add a transistor to reduce the treble. Regards
