[#3203] TT choice? Hi, dear rsbn, I am glad hearing you would consider buying a LP12 to become a Linnie. o avoid mistake, please allow me to speak straight from my own heart. It would become rather lengthy. Buying a second hand LP12 or any old turntable is risky. It is because all turntable are mechanic, the more recent and precise they perform, the better they should sound. In summary, I would not consider any vintage turntable for performance and quality. For sharing, I have changed my LP12 several times despite updates made until I settled down with a new unit in 2003. Get the newest LP12 you can. The production from serial number 90500 (around 1992) has equipped with the standard cirkus bearing and all upgrade to LP12. I would suggest this is the least start point to look for. The cirkus bearing is still considered as the most important upgrade attribute to LP12's class A performance. Check the bearing tip, stay away if you found the tip with a dark spot when examining. Lingo power is equally important but rather expensive. Make some budget provision to renew all suspension springs, black bearing oil and drive belt. They are the first wear and tear items to leave. Stay away from heavy stand and get a light rigid stand such as the old 2-tier Target or Organization stand for your LP12. Your LP12 wll demand for a perfect level platform. Last but not least, partner your LP12 with Linn's own arm and cartridge or even phono to acheive the synergy from single system as claimed by the Linn's engineers. I tend to accept this thought. If you in doubt, can I come over to the selling place (if in HK) to inspect the LP12 before your commitment? The British Garrard 301 is a good item for vintage item collection. I guess a $4K Rega Planar 3 in proper working condition will sound better with more clarity. Just my own thought.

[#3204] TT choice? "What about Garrard 301?" This is a wrong question raised to 余慕Linn 兄. One of my friends is 黃愛Garrard. He said proudly to me that Garrard 301 was way, way better than Linn 12. But I remain reticent. :)

[#3215] QUAD ESL speaker dkyyu, I spent the entire afternoon with my ESLs and confirm that they are not quite as bad as your OTA but neither are they as good as your new ones. What's gone from the treble went to the bass. They are definitely firmer and deeper. What next? May god help me.

[#3216] QUAD ESL speaker Let Patrick pay more attention into the restoration Gingers This is not restoration any more. Literally speaking, it is face-lifting. The front cover has some wrinkles. therefore, Patrick has too get rid of it.

[#3220] QUAD ESL speaker The wrinkles add some vintage feel to the speakers. Unfortunately, all wrinkles are behind the black aluminum mask, usually it is being covered up. Like women in Middle East. It can only be seen when it was stripped.

[#3222] QUAD ESL speaker Dear rsbn, I did not realise you live in Malaysia until reminded by rcwy. My apology. Let me buy you a pint of beer or tea when you next visiting us. OK? What I am trying to express is that all vintage turntable at age over 30 yr, no matter Garrard or Linn or whatsoever, are highly unreliable indeed in term of mechanical performance. Few years back, I kept tuning my old Linn's supension everyday despite using new spring replacement and belt but always went into frustration after few hours. Frustration -> poor speed stability and blur sounding. I would have my hard earned cash spent on a newer unit with more reliable performance. Hope my paintaking experience will give a little bit of reference to those who is in the cross road when choosing his analogue front end source.
