[#3263] QUAD ESL speaker CP and powercord, We invited Patrick to re-check the OTA rebuilt ESL57 again. After full inspection, all resistor values are matched and perfect. We'd changed the capacitors inside the audio transformers with my latest type and well, the result was encouraging and more airness are back. We thought it was end of today story. Well, not yet man. Before we went out to lunch, we did our final check and only found that the treble panel of one speaker was connected to a very high ohm (over 1 meg) value resistor. We understand that the resistor is employed by OTA to suppress the treble as explained in their web-site but we were rather surprised to find it on one speaker only, not both. Now you know what we did, we cut it out and the tonel balance resumed and become natural.

[#3264] QUAD ESL speaker CP and powercord, Please check your ESL57. May I suggest you disconnected your OTA's fixed protection circuits and removed the single resistor if found along on your treble cable. No need t disconnect your audio tranformer nor EHT, ten minutes job only and I am sure you will hear the difference.

[#3266] QUAD ESL speaker With the ever growing intrinsic desire to make our OTL sound comes true, that is no transformer along the entire audio path, we went to Kowloon Excel this evening wishing to hear the Graaf amp seriously but in vain because both OTL GM20 and Mr Yu sifu were not there. What a pity. We listened to the KT88 Graaf amp instead with its low cost pre-amp. MY opinion is that the KT88 Graaf sounds like a 300B to us in terms of driving power and I think I really need to re-assess and listen to the OTL with my ESL57 before further commitment. Hope we did not upset Patrick's OTL dream.

[#3267] QUAD ESL speaker Dennis, You can borrow my Croft OTL if you want to try OTL. My Croft is having CNY/ Easter break anyway and will not be used for a while.

[#3268] QUAD ESL speaker Thanks, mda, Borrowing gear poses lots of risk to the owner and I prefer to go over to your place to hear the OTL and ESL57 sound with Dr John. You are most welcomed to come to my place again to hear my new ESL57 although using the same old QUAD II/22.

[#3269] QUAD ESL speaker Feikeung, Excel called me about the repair charge: 1) transport round trip = $550 (optional) 2) inspection = $450, refundable only if spare parts not available or unserviceable. 3) of course the cost for the spare part. Sounds reasonable, why don't you give Yu sifu a call for your Graaf.

[#3272] QUAD ESL speaker with 4 6c33 per monoblock, he can fry his eggs as well ____________________________________________ No, Feikeung cook us curry chicken instead of fried egg tonight. I did not take any 'cause I am suffering from big flu. But his curry really smell good _____________________________________________ with the 4 6c33 modena, he can fly like an angel. However, the 70 watt Modena still seems not mighty enough to feed the belly of Maggie 3.5 when playing opera. What a Maggie!!!!

[#3275] Maggie The Whore........ Greetings Gentlemen, feikeung: Congratulation on your new "Ferrari"! For some strange reason, when I first saw that listing, I knew you'll be there. I am very happy for you, well done. dkyyu: Dennis, only if I have more room, I would love to take your OTA's ESL 57!

[#3277] ESL57 I had some thought about the Graaf OTL last night. Surely the Graaf sang beautifully with charms and full transparency to my ears last evening but I guess neither the 70 watt Modena nor double GM20 can drive the maggie 3.5 to a satisfactory level. I would consider the all mighty GM200 when face with the 3.5. I believe the high impedance nature of ESL57 will probably giving the single Modena or GM20 a high hope to perform to its best while the ESL63 should benefit more when operating under the bridge mode with more power in hand. My question is, what's the best partnering pre-amp for Graaf OTL? I was told passive. Any suggestion?

[#3279] 6C33C/B The nice thing about 6C33C/B is that they can be had dirt cheap (US$16 a crack). I'm getting old and the last thing I ever want to do is to endlessly fiddle with tubes, although I have a lot of admiration for those who have the patience. Also I'm sticking to 6H30 for front end so that I don't have to go thru a jungle of 12AX7 or 6DJ8 just to find a few pieces which really work in the Audio Research SP-10/11, which, I honest think, is a nightmare.

| [#3280] ESL57 Reposted from the Hong Kong Tube Audio Club http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/hktubeaudio/message/19563 --------------------------------------------- I visited a vintage Hi Fi friend the other day and his system consisted of ESL 57 and Leak TL10. I have to admit, the sound was exceptionally open and transparent with very big sound stage. It didn't have the power in bass that the EL34 and KT88 (And no doubt F2a11!!) amps have in that area but it was very impressive in the mid range and top end. Maybe the TL10 is the bargain the Leak range at present? Regards, Carl. Re: ESL 57 and Leak TL10 The ESL57 is actually very tricky in term of amp matching and a higher power amp is not necessarily sound better. I have not visited CP's ESL57 but apparently he sometimes prefers the 3W V73 over the 25W V69 for some music with the ESL. I think John Keung is also arranging for his newly restored Leak TL50+ to meet with the ESL57. With a completed collection of Leak tube amp, it will be interesting to see which Leak amp John considers work best with ESL57. Tim Yes,at the risk of sounding repetitive: A list of best sounding amps with ESL57: Telefunken V81 monoblocks.Leak Stereo20(and probably the EL84 monoblocks are better),Dynaco Stereo 70,QUAD II with EL37 and upgraded EF86,Telefunken V73s are insufficient with 57s-but did an admirable job with Celestion SL600s-surprisingly(in a small room). In general the condition of the 57s will influence their sound more than the choice of an amplifier. The preamp should be passive if at all possible. Raanan A list of best sounding amps with ESL 57: ............please add Beam Echo DL7-35, this pair of EL34-mono-block is "high power" in figure but not too powerful in real life. i have enjoyed this combo for a few months until recently one of the ESL 57 lied down on its job. ( When will we have "One-Thing-Audio" in Hong Kong ?) AlexKY The DL7-35 should not be too "high power" as the Mullard 5-20 circuit can only produce around 20W. And I thought we do have an "One Thing Audio" in HK and it even services ESL for free! | [#3282] ESL57 Gingers, My pleasure, your Leak50 to meet my QUAD ESL57 with VT75. To save time, I can invite Edmund to bring his 110V stepdown and power wire beforehand. How about coming Thursday around noon time. I'll come to pick you up. I guess jcml and Patrick will come but CP will likely out of town. |
