[#322] QUAD ESL I just completed the loudness test with Mahler Symphony No.2 first movement and Dvorak Sym. No.8 second movement. Both sounded to close to live concert level. The speakers passed the test safely. Thank God, no arcing. I then played High Life of Jazz at the Pawn Shop. It was the most involving and realistic playback I have ever heard. Beats the BC1 hands down. As Patrick said, the saliva of the saxophone just blew to your face. I did not expect the drums to be that dynamic and realistic. The bass was just right for the drums, no more no less. Patrick said the ESL is magical and urges you to leave all other speakers behind. I shorted most of my speakers in order to get a clearer sound, leaving only the BC1 and 3/5a for occasionally comparison. Now I shorted them as well. Hats off to Peter Walker.

[#326] QUAD ESL I will seriously consider a pair of ESLs having let go my Tannoys. However, the W factor is too big a headache.

However, the W factor is too big a headache. ----------------------------------------- JL - Honestly, from what I observed so far.. you won't get a permission for a pair of screen-like speakers as ELS 57 to enter your house. I was quite shocked to know that suddenly you sold your Tannoy. Good luck anyway! :) |

[#329] QUAD ESL JL, My partner, Chan, also wants to get a pair in his house after listening for a few days. It's a brand new experience. He now plays a BC1. He also got a decor problem. What he is thinking of is to get a cloth grille with some pattern or painting so that they won't look obtrusive. Interesting.

[#330] QUAD ESL R I had dropped the idea of letting go my Tannoy Golds for quite some time. A couple of weeks ago, several people approached me for the speakers. The Golds were given away at a 老友價. To my surprise, it was soon resold. Had I known this, the story might have been different. I seldom turn on my gear these days. I have given away several nice toys so as to concentrate on my research work. As General McArthur said, I will come back. Of course, it is still too early to decide on what I am going to acquire at this stage. ESL speakers should definitely be considered if the obstacles such as the W factor, positioning, etc can be solved.

[#331] QUAD ESL The best sound I have heard from ESL57's so far was at a UK house (picture below). The ESL57 played "the Wall" of Pink Floyd and gave punchy bass indeed (stronger than any ESL57's I have heard so far in HK). The mid to high ranges were, no need to mention, seductively transparent! ![]()

[#332] QUAD ESL The picture below did not show the actual positioning of the ESLs when they were played. They were in fact each supported by two LS3/5As (as stands), and were away from the back wall and the side walls. The soft spot was found a few feet from the ESL and only 1 to 2 feet wide on the seat. When listening, no listeners should move their heads, left or right, front or back. ![]()

[#335] QUAD ESL So the best stand for Quad ESL57 is ---- LS3/5A !!! ---------------------------------------- That was unbelieveable, but true. The option is very wasteful too. TWO pairs LS3/5As = no less than the price of ESL57! :)

[#339] QUAD ESL The "dead chicken" given out by adyc and picked up by me is filled with bird flu. I was immediately infected. No cure. Can't leave the ESL for a moment. I made up the excuse to pick up the jones plugs for Gingers and drove a long way back to the office, just to enjoy the ESL57 for 2 hours. As rcwy said he heard the best 57 with Pink Floyd, I took along "The Wall". Sounded great but still don't know how it compares with 57 on 3/5a. Incidentally I also have 2 pairs of 3/5a, just 2 pairs; may be I can try the 57 on 3/5a tomorrow. ![]()

[#340] QUAD ESL I think CP got a great deal. It is absolutely a steal for an ESL57 in such good condition! The cash price he paid can not be used as a reference for future deals. It should be considered as "Can meet, can not demand" example.
