| [#3389] Quad ESL The matching of the Graaf Modena and ESL57 today really is a pleasant surprise. With the TVC as preamp, we tried transparency close to the extremity. Even without the best speaker placement, a reasonable soundstage with all musical instruments so clearly and vividly displayed is just awesome. I believe some might even complain that it is too transparent, as it reveals every tiny flaw in the chain. The Modena, in its "parallel" mode, made the sound coarse as we have experimented in Excel. Just if we could "unbridge" the Modena, as a normal GM20, it could well stand as the ultimate combo. Patrick..........................next time when I bring the phono amp, I'll try to bring the V72/V73 as well, so that these 2 "best combo for ESL57" can meet head on. |

| [#3391] The Joy of OCL The difference between having an output transformer and OCL is like the difference between wearing a rubber and without. Output transformers invariably veil the signal, resulting in a soft/sloppy sound which a lot of audiophiles term “romantic”. By the same token, rubbers numb sensations to the extent where a lot of people can not maintain erection throughout the act (yours truly included). With electrostatics, which tops other transducers in transient response, the benefit of coupling direct to the output tubes becomes apparent. In high current applications, OTL/OCL designs fail to deliver and output transformers are inevitable. I would shy away from designs which employ more than two pairs of output tubes in parallel per channel as I’m not a tweaker and don’t want to open a can of worms. I’m glad that Patrick has found his “幸福”. |

OTL = Output Transformer Less OCL = Output Capacitor Less Up to this moment, I guess tube amps cannot have their outputs properly tended without the coupling cap.
