| [#3470] Afternoon Delight - passive pre+OTL+ ESL57 DJ and Conde, The Graaf OTL and ESL57, like ivory and ebony, really spark off when come together. Today, this together has changed my perception and set me a new insight into audio journey. I don't know whether this is your cup of tea or not, but let me assure you that the ESL and OTL will give me somehting new and fresh in audio experience unless you have them both beforehand. I guess my staying with the TVC and OTL is short, I am almost 100% sure that Feikeung and CP will squeeze them back very shortly after they listened to their babies singing together with LP source. |

I’m glad I have not…… _____________________________________________________________ feikeung , What an enlightening statement in the morning. Great to see your childish face yesterday. How come no one is reporting the event yesterday? You guys must have stayed late and indulged too much in feikeung's dirty jokes. We had a large group gathered at Dennis' just about at noon time, Condefly, doctorjohn, jcml, allan, Patrick and Wah Gor, Edmund and feikeung joined later i the afternoon. The event was, of course, passive preamp + Modena OTL driving Dennis' original Quad ESL57 and comparing briefly with the Quad22/II(VT75) combo. The curtain lifted with the Quad II playing some chinese music. DJ has the sharpest ear and quickly pointed out that the VT75 is actually much softer and slower than the KT66 we heard last time though it sounded more open and a wider soundstage. I have always prefer KT66 on Quad II than VT75 just as I like 6L6GC on MC240 rather than KT66. When switched to the TVC and Modena, everybody expected a coup de theatre and yes transparency was miles ahead of the Quad II combo. Depth and width improved significantly with the transparency, microdynamic is excellent with the details but yet the rhythm seemed to be rather flat. Performance was not really up to expectation. The session after lunch was much better with the Modena having stretched its arms and legs for a while and more particularly after Edmund had replaced the 2 differently-looked power cords with his "made-in-UK", looked expensive and possibly the ignition cables for Aston Martin to match the Ferrari Modenas. As usual, Dennis played every record for no more than 3 minutes and had Edmund standby to deliver the numerous records when he was busily swapping. We then decided to swap the Venture interconnect with a Cardas Golden Reference......................... That makes a hell of a difference. All the rhythm was back and music played was so much more involving. Soundstage was not as wide as with the Venture and transparency seemed to be sacrificed but as Condefly said it's because the "density" was improved. Dennis, now with a smiling face, started to play his favourite 葛蘭，靜婷，鄭少秋 etc. and upon request the 男燒衣 of 阮兆輝. When everyone was enjoying the "perfect" performance from the system, feikeung emerged from nowhere. Dennis rushed to play feikeung's favourite La Traviata and just about when everyone was to say it's sound from heaven, feikeung, with his most innocent and childish look, suddenly yelled "there is severe distortion of the vocals, it's devil's cry from hell". We all had a poker face and that's the time I left the crime scene, not sure whether there's huge bloodshed afterwards. Can anyone report the aftermath............................... |

The Cardas cable has a strong character of its own — heavy emphasis on the mid range at the expense of both ends of the spectrum. It gives you more body but takes away the finesse. When this cable appears to be the right choice, it may suggest deficiencies somewhere along the chain. The best interconnect, I think, should be neutral in the first place. |

I couldn’t sleep that night before the event because I was threaten that we are going to audition that Ferrari Modenas with two different thickness power cables. I have nightmare that night about I was sitting in the Firrari with two difference thickness tyres then crashed. Therefore, I vowed to find two identical thickness power cables in my house before attending Dennis’ Party. Sorry, I was late. You can imagine how difficult to find two identical power cable in your house. Frankly speaking, they are not any expensive power cables. I unplugged them from my computer and monitor. Sorry, unable to meet your expectations for expensive power cable like your “Venture”, “Cardas”. I think the difference is 70W Modenas and 12 W Qual II. If you agree less power the quality is more refine. Some interesting facts concluded, when we play 葛蘭, 紅線女, 阮兆輝, OTL is better, but when we play Rossini, some instrumental music, Qual II is better. We believe that OTL may needs a pre-amp to add some spirit. Therefore, we decided to use a pre-amp to do the test again. |
