[#3583] Balanced cable on Graaf/TVC DJ, conde and Edmund, You never know that all our jaws were almost dropped when we switched CP's balanced cable to Fred's Kimber RCA on Monday. We all noticed huge enhancement was made to both sound stage and details. The improvement was as much as changing from transformer amp to OTL amp to my ears. I really don't know why such a big variance. Was it Kimber the better or RCA is much superior? I knew Patrick is ordering some Kimber RCA from US and CP must be busy enough posting an adv to sell all his expensive balance cable.

[#3584] Balanced cable on Graaf/TVC Would you mind telling us what's your computer model? To be frank, that cables are not really for computer. I believe they were being used for my equipment like Tektronix oscilloscope and Marconi signal generator .etc. They were really unplugged from my computer that day. I am not sure how good they are for Graf amplifiers. You never know unless you compare with other cables. As you know, most audiophile power cables are US plugs. That is why it is quite difficult to find two identical UK plugs power cables. Kimber RCA cable. I recall that DJ did ask you to try RCA cable last Thursday. I almost had gone back my home to pick it up that day. I am not sure how great improvement has been made when compared with the XLR cables. Oops you mean you replaced your Linn back cable with Kimber RCA cable? We have told you thousand times doing this.

[#3585] Maggies better not talk TOO much about Maggies in the ESL thread _____________________________________________________________ DJ, That's Ok. Maggies and Quad ESLs are kinsfolks though not of the same blood. We brag and accuse each other being the black sheep of the family. Yet we stay together when confronted by the HORNs.

[#3586] Balanced cable on Graaf/TVC Dear Edmund, Nothing to do with the Linn RCA cable yet. I suspected it was about balanced vs RCA or Venture vs Kimber when using a TVC passive pre-amp.

[#3587] Balanced cable on Graaf/TVC Dennis, In that case, the difference was either caused by the TVX balance input or XLR/RCA cables. Are you sure the cable bring about the difference?

[#3589] Balanced cable on Graaf/TVC Dennis, Mix and match are always playfulness in audio system, there should not be absolute in brand name products and routines say XLR or RCA. Let me know if you want to try out my modern but paltry German tube gears.

[#3590] Maggies Feikeung’s twin engines Ferrari no doubt has given us a refreshingly experience in audio audition. However, all of us were dissatisfied and the performance is still puzzle to us. Therefore I make an assumption. We have been making mistakes in matching so far. I was convinced after Dennis admits that the Kimber RCA is much better than Venture XLR cables. Anyone can tell us the TVC only good for RCA to RCA and XLR to XLR. In case RCA to XLR, that was the connecting being used in Dennis house, unfortunately there had no other preamp to do the comparison. That is why it was good only for certain music like 葛蘭, 紅線女, 阮兆輝, OTL is better. That music only emphasis in mid-range. CP , when it move to you place, you better try different connections to see whether it is true or not.

[#3591] Modena dkyyu, You might have to give up trying to abduct feikeung's Ferraris. He is not going to let go. He was so pleased with his Modenas today that he said he had never heard a better Joan Sutherland. After a few drinks, he was so excited that he wanted to call a van to ferry the Modena/ESL combo to Sai Kung right away and challenge limage on the spot. We had difficulties calming him down and DJ eventually took him to his place, disguising as limage with his newly acquired MG12.

[#3592] Quad ESL Thanks for the bunch visiting me today, after I'd been waiting for a lonesome 7~8 months period; Dennis, Patrick and Lee in the morning and a group of lovely chaps, Kris, Alan, Charles, Wei, feikeung, DJ and Andy. Alan and Charles get used to huge JBL and Altec sound with their La Stupenda, I hope I prove the Quad is at least no less a La Divina. Interesting that Alan offered to match his newly acquired 24" Hartley woofers with the ESL. This is a compliment but at the same time means that he reckoned the sound is still not "big" enough! dkyyu.....................the sound level today is to the satisfaction of feikeung which is really something, and my ESL didn't crack!

[#3593] Quad ESL Whilst feikeung was happy with the sound pressure, Kris the masochist, who enjoys his massage not with a massage girl but with his speakers, found this nothing. The only thing he found interesting in my place is this CD cover. Kris........................sorry about the boring stuff, and the HEAT. I saw you keep sweating. Blame the 6C33s. ![]()

[#3594] Quad ESL Morning Gentlemen, CP, thank you so much for yesterday! Before I write an impression on the lovely visit, I must let you know that my "sweating" was from playing 18 holes of golf on Wednesday under extreme heat, my body takes a few days to cool off after a game. As for the Carmen CD, I am always fascinated by "Carmen covers" - Cds & LPs, not just for it's pornographic value but also the different ways of portraying the image of Carmen - the ultimate slut. As the story goes: the ballet was written in the 1800s on a Spanish soldier who falls passionately in love with a Gypsy woman "Carmen" and deserts his regiment to follow a life of crime and murder for her. Because the "bitch" would not be faithful to him, the soldier kills her and tells his story while awaits for his execution. Right! Now back to the cover..... I can appreciate the "red-gloved-hands" hovering all over her body representing the open sexuality of Carmen, but it was the shape of the women's body that puzzled me a little - the women in the photo does not carry the "weight" of a Gypsy Slut living in the 1800s, she looks more like an aerobic instructor living in the 1980s. This looks more like a woman's body from the 1800s which considered to be very desirable at the time... ![]()

[#3595] Quad ESL Edmund, We now suspect on the balance connection. Please allow more time to investigate. CP, I was once tempted to collect some legendary furniture pieces many years back after college but now I only collect cheap and old stuff like ESL57. It seems I am more like 收買老. I think Feikeung's Modena really sings beautifully with the ESL57 and Music First TVC. The GM20 needs tuning before their singing. I went to visit Limage's again last night. I guess the Modena and ESL is still far behind his Maggie 3.5 and CJ P1 in terms of puch and dynamic.

[#3596] Quad ESL dkyyu, I can now confirm that it's the XLR connection. The Graaf is 1=0, 2=-, 3=+, which is different to US standard of 1=0, 2=+, 3=-. We later in the afternoon drove the Modena with the V72 preamp and found the dynamic and subtleties much better than just using the TVC.

[#3597] Quad ESL CP, Remember we all regarded the Music first TVC is superior to the more expensive 13.5 pre-amp when we were hanging around in Excel with Yu sifu? From groups' opinion yesterday, is that the active sounded superior than the TVC in all aspects? Shall we settle on active when using OTL and ESL57? Please advise for my reference.

[#3599] Quad ESL I opened feikeung's Modena to see whether it can be unbridged to a stereo version and am curious to note what differences there are with the GM20. ![]()

[#3600] Quad ESL It actually can be unbridged by just taking out the mono kit as with the GM20. The arrows show the different components used in the Modena. Few resistors are changed to same value different type resistors. The 4 white capacitors are changed to 2uF 500V rather than the 5uF 200V in the GM20. The rest is just the same. feikeung....................................please note that the arrow on the right hand side shows the bolt fastening the power transformer has been "touched". The bolt is a different one and the spring washer is missing. The tapping of the power transformer as shown by the coloured cables does not comply with any tapping configuration in the manual. One of the screws in the PCB is not fastened at all. Just for your information. ![]()

[#3601] Quad ESL the women in the photo does not carry the "weight" of a Gypsy Slut living in the 1800s __________________________________________________________________________________ Kris, I like her face. She looks like one of my old classmate in high school whom I didn't fancy at all at that time. But her expression is so innocent yet salacious. Photo of Maria Callas before she trimmed down to 140lb. She was 200 by then and certainly carries the weight favoured by those in the 1800s. A lovely face though, not as wicked and demonic as after she became queen of the operas. ![]()
