However, I believe it still lacks the 6 db gain and the active gives fuller body to music but lose ground on vocal and string. In view of its cheap price and high c/p ratio, me and Patrick are considering to buy the Caddock resister unit in due course. |

| [#3647] Quad ESL David, Please ask for overseas shipping and packing rate. They could be costy when adding to the final total. The price depends on both cosmetic and working condition. If shipment is excluded, I am willy to pay around CAD $2K for a properly working pair ESL57 or ESL63. Anything below CAD $1.5K is considered as bargain providing all panels and electronics are in proper condition w/o needing repair. However, my terms will become invalid if faulty or damage panel. Once the ESL57 panels are checked OK, they can last forever unless abused by user. I guess the diodes in EHT boards will drop and some resisters in the crossover will change value after 20 years continous service, anyway they only cost you a hundred for total replacement and I reckon the replacement work is quite a simple task to DIY people. Once replaced, the ESL57 can last for another few decades. You will be able to find most offerings in the region between GBP500 and GBP700 from UK ebay, but you have to prepare GBP400 for the shipping cost alone and then fetch another few thousand HK$ to replace the aged EHT and arched panel. How about sending us more info such as photo and condition through this thread for prior joint discussion before your comittment. |

| [#3651] Quad ESL David, I live in HK. Like what Gingers suggested. Check the sound level of both speaker. Set them apart by 6 feet, centre to centre, Turn to expected normal listening level. If the EHT board is aged, the sound pressure will be low. For your reference, under normal circumstance, the ESL should sound 4db to 5db louder than LS3/5s. If one side sound lower than other, it is common because of ageing EHT diodes. If both sides sounded low without hiss, they worth the price, just simply spend CAD10 to replace all diodes yourself. If hissing heard, you need to budget around CAD200 for each panel replacement, of course excluding labour. Anyway, I believe the ESL57 CAD1,200 is s steal is nothing wrong and no restoration needed 'cause you won't find a better mid range from other speaker on this planet. BEst wishes Dennis |

| [#3654] Quad ESL Davidyee, The ESL 57 and Tannoy Gold are different beasts althgether. The ESL is very accurate and very demanding on program source, among other things. Everything preceding it must be of the purest quality. Tannoy, on the other hand, is virtually a musical instrument itself, which means it is much easier to the ear no matter what you throw at it. The Tannoy is almost always musically satisfying while the ESL has the ultimate potential to sound shockingly real. Both are great speakers depending on whereupon your personal tastes lie. In my opinion, which may not be humble at times, it is easier to make the ESL sound musical than to make the Tannoy sound accurate. |

| [#3660] Quad ESL Dear mda, The two EHT boards installed in your ESL57 was newly bought from One Thing Audio in early 2006. All panels are QUAD originals with no arching as checked by Kung sifu from local dealer. So I guess they should work fine for two decades Have you tried swapping the right and left speaker to see if the low sound volume come from the speaker or from tubes. Will you be free tomorrow morning or afternoon? may be we could come around. Dennis |
